You know the drill, change the reply's subject for the topic you want to discuss.

Channel Awesome

(Anonymous) 2018-03-28 01:21 am (UTC)(link)
So it's been known for a long time that CA's business practices have not been... good, to put it mildly. I made a secret about it about three years ago, saying that I'd kinda wish it would crash and burn. I haven't followed the site for years, sticking to watching the contributors I still like through youtube.

Some things seem to be coming to a head. Linkara, one of the biggest names still remaining, has left the site. Several others have left as well (Suede, MikeJ, SFDEbris). Former contributors are compiling a google document on all the mis-treatment that will be published on April 2nd.

Anyway, I've been reading a lot of the talk surrounding this, and it has been bumming me out, mostly because the site used to be a big part of my online life for a few years back in the day.

Also the cynical part of me thinks that even with the doc's release, the Walkers and Michaud will just do as they always do and refuse to comment and nothing will change. I doubt most of Nostalgia Critic's viewers know about this stuff.

I don't know anyone who actually watches his stuff anymore. That may be because I'm older, though. Most people I know watch Todd or Linkara.

On that note, is Brad Jones sticking with him?

I don't know anyone personally either, but I've gotten the impression it's mostly younger people who watch him who haven't outgrown his style of humor as most long-time CA wathcers have.

Brad has not made any comment on the subject, I think ever. He is going to a con with Doug between 4th and 6th, so at least at the moment he seems to be sticking with him.

I stopped bothering with the site a year or so ago when I learned you could just wait a day for NC videos to go up on youtube....and then I forgot about those.

I stopped following the channel as a whole after the first exodus, and just watch the people I like individually. I'm really interested in the google docs though, considering Linkara, Todd, Rantasmo, and a bunch of other people are leaving in the wake of all this.

I guess now the only big names left are Doug himself (who has lost a lot of popularity) and Brad, unless I'm forgetting someone.

It is a really weird feeling though. I too used to be super into tgwtg/ca

I think Angry Joe's still in, though it's not like he ever mentions his involvement with the Channel at all in his videos. I wouldn't be surprised if he unceremoniously leaves as well.

I agree on the strangeness. On the other hand I am also very curious about the document, and what kind of waves it might cause, on the other hand it seriously bums me out, because back in the day, before this all came to light, I remember how it felt like the Channel was like one big happy family.

I stopped going to the site after J-Dub passed away. I was way too sad over that to follow the site anymore.

I'd been steadily losing interest in the site for a while before To Boldly Flee, which was a megaclusterfuck, and while I still like a lot of the individual people, especially Lindsey Ellis, I do get a schadenfreude-y delight out of watching it die this messy, prolonged death. It's bittersweet, since I was really into them around 2008-2010, but this was a long time coming.

I actually only got into watching this sort of thing (online reviews of movies and such) in the past...idk, six months or so?

But IMO it's no great loss. I honestly find a lot of the other contributors who have already left CA to be more knowledgeable and make more interesting content than the people still with CA. Especially the ones who were with Chez Apocalypse (Lindsay, Kyle Kallgren, Maven of the Eventide whose real name I am blanking on right now). From what I can gather most of these people weren't been involved with the issues, which is nice.

Buffy

Every time I watch this show, I come to love it more and more. I relate so much to both Buffy and Willow. I want a dad or father figure like Giles. I don't even really ship anything except Willow/Tara and Willow/Oz. Everything about this show I just love. So, anything you want to talk about Buffy, I'm game.

Do you hang out on r/buffy? It's pretty active, and the posts range from first time viewers burbling to us old farts tracking down trivia.

The most recent popular post was a Warren "appreciation" post. Consensus was that he was not only utterly loathsome back then (e.g., the 'best' Buffy villain because he was the worst), but because he sadly presaged a lot of current behavior.

I'm too scared to venture onto reddit, honestly. Heard and seen too many bad things about that site.

Aw, I'm sorry to hear that. Reddit's just a collection of forums, though. There's no reason to have a bad experience if you don't go seeking out the nasty--and you certainly don't have to stay in a particular subreddit if it sucks. Your backbutton will continue to function, you will be fine. :)

Aw, and you don't trust me? Seriously, just go and lurk on the buffy reddit. You'll see. (fwiw I had the same preconceptinos about reddit, but like every other fandom space a) it depends on the mods and b) there are good spaces and nasty spaces.

Here, here's the Warren discussion.

Or even browse the topics:

Reddit's what you make of it. There are good corners and bad corners, but modded communities and the "block user" function makes it pretty easy to avoid the bad if you want to.
