how is wanting to know someone's vaguely-referenced fandom badgering or demanding that they do what we want?

like, you want the comm to stay alive, a little extra info goes a long way toward prolonging discussions. it's really not that hard to write fandom: X when you slap that imgur link into the submission post, it's not fucking outing anyone and their deep secrets.

Right? Throw us a friggin' bone so we can acutally discuss shit.

Seriously.

"This person's patronus art is a direct copy and paste of mine, but they're a BNF and head of Hufflepuff house on our RP board....but I'm not naming the fandom"

What is the difference between a vague secret stating that you're bitter that your fics are unpopular in an undisclosed small fandom, and a secret stating that you're bitter that your fics are unpopular in a specific small fandom?

One gives people a frame of reference and something to discuss, and the other has no frame of reference so the only thing people discuss is how annoying it is when people make vague non-secrets?

If it's a fandom so small that no one here knows it or cares about it, it makes no meaningful difference. There are plenty of secrets about small fandoms that never generate discussion despite giving people a frame of reference. In all likelihood a lot of the vague secrets that people yell about would go completely unnoticed were the creators to name the fandom.

This.

If the fandom is really so small that no one cares about it, then there's even less point in not naming it. Unless you're afraid that people on fs are going to join your fandom just to harass you for your secret? That's pretty paranoid and narcissistic of you, nonny.

You're really obvious on flatview, and you're not making your side look good.

(Anonymous) 2018-03-30 01:15 pm (UTC)(link)
People generally don't complain about fandoms not being named when it's a very general issue, like your fics being unpopular, or that one juggernaut pairing creeping in everywhere. Those are pretty universal problems, so people can relate to and discuss them whether you're talking about the issue in the context of Megafandom A or Microfandom Z.

When the vagueing gets irritating is when you're talking about something that's fandom specific - a particular character or fandom dynamic, or plot development, or whatever. At best, there's not enough information to actually have a conversation, and at worst, it comes off as though you're trying to manipulate people into agreeing with you blind by witholding context.

(Anonymous) 2018-03-30 07:30 pm (UTC)(link)
Right, but if it's a secret with details specific to Microfandom Z there's not likely going to be a conversation because it's likely that no one here knows or cares about the fandom/character dynamics specific to Microfandom Z anyways. I have nothing at all to say about whatever drama might be occurring in the Kim Kardashian: Hollywood fandom, and if there was a secret about said drama, we'd all be more likely to leave confused comments about the existence of a fandom for this mobile game and/or general Kardashian critical comments than to "have a conversation" about the secret itself.

(Anonymous) 2018-03-30 02:33 am (UTC)(link)
I mean. The secret is very obviously about people who DO badger OP to name the fandom. If you're curious or asking politely, it's not about you. Also, people keep secrets vague for many reasons, not just because they're too lazy to write the fandom down. Just because you don't find those reasons valid doesn't mean they have to oblige you.

Frankly, the amount of pissy entitlement in your comment makes me think that hey, making vague secrets is a great idea.
