That's a very punchable stick(?) figure

(Anonymous) 2018-03-29 11:52 pm (UTC)(link)
usually when I ask about a vague fandom it's either because a) I think I can relate or b) if it's a new factoid about a fandom, I like to add it to my mental card file.

NAME THE FANDOM YOU COWARDS!!

(Anonymous) 2018-03-30 12:47 am (UTC)(link)
Seriously.

(Anonymous) 2018-03-30 01:14 am (UTC)(link)
I do that, and my particular corner of an already small fandom is close-knit enough, any sense of anonymity is gone. It will be blatantly obvious who I am.

Thus, I cannot contribute secrets because I'll be blasted for being vague.

Sucks, but that's life.

(Anonymous) 2018-03-30 02:30 am (UTC)(link)
Shan't. *makes more vague secrets*

(Anonymous) 2018-03-30 02:37 am (UTC)(link)
Harry Potter, Supernatural, Pretty Little Liars, Stranger Things, Star Wars, Star Trek, Stargate, Veronica Mars, Doctor Who, Sherlock, Elementary, Percy Jackson, Marvel Cinematic Universe, Transformers, Undertale, Mortal Kombat, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, Naruto, Watchmen, South Park, Gravity Falls...

Enough fandoms for you or should I keep going?

(Anonymous) 2018-03-30 04:36 am (UTC)(link)
Right??

(Anonymous) 2018-03-29 11:38 pm (UTC)(link)
how is wanting to know someone's vaguely-referenced fandom badgering or demanding that they do what we want?

like, you want the comm to stay alive, a little extra info goes a long way toward prolonging discussions. it's really not that hard to write fandom: X when you slap that imgur link into the submission post, it's not fucking outing anyone and their deep secrets.

(Anonymous) 2018-03-29 11:42 pm (UTC)(link)
Right? Throw us a friggin' bone so we can acutally discuss shit.

Seriously.

"This person's patronus art is a direct copy and paste of mine, but they're a BNF and head of Hufflepuff house on our RP board....but I'm not naming the fandom"

(Anonymous) 2018-03-29 11:56 pm (UTC)(link)
What is the difference between a vague secret stating that you're bitter that your fics are unpopular in an undisclosed small fandom, and a secret stating that you're bitter that your fics are unpopular in a specific small fandom?

I mean. The secret is very obviously about people who DO badger OP to name the fandom. If you're curious or asking politely, it's not about you. Also, people keep secrets vague for many reasons, not just because they're too lazy to write the fandom down. Just because you don't find those reasons valid doesn't mean they have to oblige you.

Frankly, the amount of pissy entitlement in your comment makes me think that hey, making vague secrets is a great idea.

It's hard to comment on or discuss a secret when the secret maker won't tell you the fandom.

(Anonymous) 2018-03-30 02:35 am (UTC)(link)
Not necessarily. Some secrets generate plenty of discussion even though the fandom isn't named, because it addresses a thing that's common to more than one fandom and doesn't require specific details in order to be relatable.

(Anonymous) 2018-03-29 11:46 pm (UTC)(link)
No. The most discussion all the vague secrets ever get is the "Is it this fandom? How about this one? What the fuck are we talking about here?" discussions, so if you get your way those secrets might as well stay in their OPs' Documents folders as they will contribute nothing to the comm at all.

(Anonymous) 2018-03-29 11:52 pm (UTC)(link)
It's pretty hard to discuss a secret if the secret maker doesn't mention the fandom. It just ends up being speculation and that's boring.

Furthermore, I just don't see the point. Why submit something to FANDOM Secrets if you're not going to tell us the fandom? Vaguepost on your own blog.

(Anonymous) 2018-03-29 11:55 pm (UTC)(link)
If they vagueposted on their blog, it wouldn't be anonymous...

Alternately, we're expected to know which boring, derivative, and visually indistinguishable cast from some minor genre work we're expected to discuss.

(Anonymous) 2018-03-30 12:23 am (UTC)(link)
Honestly, I doubt that the people who constantly complain about vague secrets ~not generating enough discussion~ care much about all the tragically vague secrets that are about obscure books or TV shows. I think that mostly they just don't want to miss out on any secrets that are about the wanky fandom du jour and miss an opportunity to yell about Reylo or whatever for fifty comments.

Yeah, as curious as I am, knowing the fandom won't affect me much. Not to mention, a few of the fandoms I've made secrets about I just cannot name. Naming it would out me because the fandom is small and tight knit. Everyone would know and it's good to release your feelings into a secret without having the fandom tear your throat out for saying certain things.

Sometimes the fandom is relevant to the secret.

(Anonymous) 2018-03-30 01:27 am (UTC)(link)
Especially when talking about disagreements. Like if the secret poster is talking about how they love the character, but another fan really doesn't and writes the character as a bad guy. It makes a big difference if the character is Hannibal Lecter versus Albus Dumbledore versus Nyota Uhura. If the secret poster is making a complaint about if something is possible canon, whether it's Once Upon a Time or Hawaii Five-0 is going to make a difference. I will agree that people being really demanding about it is rude, but asking what the fandom is, that isn't entitled, that's asking for more information for them to decide if they agree, disagree, or have something else relevant to say. And sometimes the fandom doesn't matter and people are just curious.

Re: Sometimes the fandom is relevant to the secret.

(Anonymous) 2018-03-30 02:39 am (UTC)(link)
The secret isn't about people who ask politely, nor does it call people who ask politely entitled. It specifically addresses the people who aren't polite.

Well, excuse me OP for being intrigued by what the secret maskers are talking about. Seriously, fuck off with your high and mighty attitude.
