* Ask to see the unit you'll be renting if you can, not just a model unit.

* Look online for reviews, especially ones that address noise, crime, etc.

* Note public/communal areas and how well they're kept/clean, because that tells you how attentive the management is.

* Check/ask about decorating policy re: your unit. Ditto pet policy.

* Ask about noise levels, whether or not there are designated quiet times, etc.
