Visit a complex you like at various times of the day/week, and nights/weekends. It'll give you an idea of what the community is like.

Look into their rules, what kind of things they allow. What their policies on roommates, pets, garbage, things included/not included in the bill. Decide if you can live by such things.

Check out apartment reviews websites, multiple ones if you can.
