Now that I think about it, this is apparently where I draw the line, too. Fic where David Rossi goes into heat every month and leaks lube from his ass? Meh, I can suspend my disbelief. Fic where he coughs up petals because a flower of unrequited love for Gideon is growing in his lungs? Somehow just can't see it.

For some reason, that particular example just made me crack the fuck up. Wow, thanks anon!

Honestly it's not even about suspension of disbelief. I can suspend my disbelief for that. The problem is that it's a horror plot to me, not a romance plot. A plant growing in someone's lungs because of unrequited love is some Junji Ito type of body horror shit. It's honestly really offputting and unpleasant. It's the exact opposite of fluff.

(Anonymous) 2018-04-01 08:46 pm (UTC)(link)
That's a good point.

Also what is it with fandom and the public humiliation of having your unrequited feelings forcibly broadcast? Not even the prospect of eventual smoochies can lessen the sense of violation I'd feel.

This reminds me of a truly wretched Harry Potter fic I once read. Snape forces Harry to drink a potion that makes him reveal his deepest secret in front of the entire Potions class, and the secret turns out to be that he wants to have sex with Snape. Setting aside that every character except Harry is OOC, the entire premise seems horrific to me.

I can see something like that played up for the humiliation kink. For romance? Nope nope nope.

(Anonymous) 2018-04-01 08:53 pm (UTC)(link)
It reminds me too much of that Torchwood episode where they suffocate from flower petals, so I'm not thinking about romance at all in that context.

I literally thought that is where it came from. Some kind of Japanese horror comment. The 1-2 fics I've scanned through that had did nothing to make me think it wasn't horrifying.

(Anonymous) 2018-04-01 08:57 pm (UTC)(link)
Hey, horror and romance are a classic genre pairing.

(Anonymous) 2018-04-01 09:03 pm (UTC)(link)
See, I’d probably like Hanahaki AUs if they were written as body horror, rather than some sort of idealized romantic ~wasting away~ for true love. I mean, really. I love you too much to give up my feelings so I’ll quietly condemn myself to die choking on blood and flower petals...but I don’t love you enough to just say so? I like pining fic as much as the next person but that just makes me stop caring about the characters involved in favour of wanting to smack them for being stupid. Especially because the trope in most such fics seems to be that it’s a widely recognized phenomenon, to maximize the sufferer’s angst or some such as they choose to dramatically die for love.

I’d love to see someone do a take on it as upsetting and off putting as it would actually be. I know I’d be terrified if the persistent tickle in my throat eventually led to coughing flower petals (WTF!) in to my hands, and then more and more of them, and then bloodied flower petals, and never being able to catch a full breath anymore. Worse still, if it’s some little known curse, rather tha some widely commented-upon phenomenon. (If we must keep the romance in it, then make it get worse whenever you’re around the person you most want to spend time with.) That’s not romantic, that’s horrifying.

That does sound like an interesting, more psychological story

Better than "I have a disease where I throw up flower petals because I'm in love with you and if you don't return my feelings I might literally DIE from it 8)"

Right?? XD to borrow a (perfect) description from an anon below, the “dying of unrequited love” thing inherent to hanahaki is just so overwrought. I also find it pretty aggravating that hanahaki sufferers always seem to be or become aware of exactly what’s happening and explicitly CHOOSE to allow themselves to dramatically die of it.

I’ll take body horror (and confusion and morbid jokes about flower petals being better than thorns/spiders/other awful or pointy things and eventual fear over just how bad this can all get) any day over pseudo-consumptive lovers wilting melodramatically into the arms of their secret crushes any day.

I would also like happy endings after the horror pls, because I am a sentimental wreck.

I'd be pretty pissed if I found out someone had loved me, didn't give any indication, and then died of flower-puking. What if I had feelings for them, too? Or even if I didn't, rejection could have allowed them to move on instead of choking of flower petal vomit. Now someone is dead and I feel responsible. Thanks a lot dude.

Yessss, this. That’s another part of the trope that I hate. Unrequited love is awful, sure. But choosing to die of it instead of dealing with it is melodramatic and stupid. Not to mention selfish as fuck in this context.

You know, it'd be funny to read a more realistic story about the disease that shows all the negative side effects, and then have some minor characters talk about how 'cute and tragically romantic' it all seems, and the protagonist goes "I AM D Y I N G, you DUMBASSES!"

(Anonymous) 2018-04-02 12:18 am (UTC)(link)
I'm torn between laughing at this and wanting to scrub these images out of my mind. Wow.

(I do kinda like the idea of Rossi/Gideon, though. Just...not like that. But hey, to each their own, and all that good stuff :D!)
