I've never read fic with Hanahaki disease but it's one of those things where I get that there could be one or two fics with it but I don't get that people would want to write it over and over. I mean how many new things can you say about it? But to each their own.

(Anonymous) 2018-04-01 08:01 pm (UTC)(link)
Yeah I totally don't get the appeal at all. Hard agree, OP.

I’ve never heard of this before, but it still sounds less silly than some of the soulmate stuff I’ve seen.

(Anonymous) 2018-04-01 08:22 pm (UTC)(link)
I've seen it once, in the Bright fandom. Kandomere was vomiting rose petals and would've died unless be confessed to his loveinterest.

(Anonymous) 2018-04-01 08:24 pm (UTC)(link)
I've never heard of this. I can just dismiss things like ABO alternate biology and psychic-connection soul mates as fantasy, but with this I'd be wondering "So did they eat a bunch of flower petals, or...?"

(Anonymous) 2018-04-01 08:28 pm (UTC)(link)
Now that I think about it, this is apparently where I draw the line, too. Fic where David Rossi goes into heat every month and leaks lube from his ass? Meh, I can suspend my disbelief. Fic where he coughs up petals because a flower of unrequited love for Gideon is growing in his lungs? Somehow just can't see it.

To each his/her own. I like Hanahaki AUs. I love pining and woobies and hurt/comfort, and this is a great mix of a bunch of that. I view it the same as A/B/O where it's just a mash-up of tropey goodness. I have seen some worldbuilding attempts with Hanahaki AUs that seem interesting. IDK, it's so ridiculous that I view it as fantasy/magic so it never occurs to me that it should make any kind of sense.

petal vomit all over your fandom... ouch

That's what that is? I've seen only a handful of fics, always mentioning the disease and then vomiting/coughing up flower petals. I never knew it was an unrequited love thing.

When it comes to fic I can deal with the silliest things, so some kind of outward symbol of pining actually sounds like it could be fun. I've read soulmate AUs where if one half rejected the other they'd waste away, and loved those.

But vomiting flowers...Eww. As if making it flowers would somehow make the act delicate and romantic. Vomit is disgusting, sure, but the act of vomiting itself feels worse IMO.

(Anonymous) 2018-04-01 08:54 pm (UTC)(link)
What the fuck.

I mean I get the appeal of the power dynamics of ABO, it's kinky af but pretty primal. There's nothing sexy about vomiting. UGH.

Omg same, it's not in my fandom exactly but it was really popular with a lot of the RPers in my circle for a while and I just don't get it at all. Idk, maybe it's partly because I'm not all that into unrequited love as a theme (unless it's something like mutual pining in a slow burn fic) so I don't get the appeal of something designed to make unrequited love even more ~dramatic.~

(Anonymous) 2018-04-01 09:01 pm (UTC)(link)
I didn't even know this was a thing and my eyes are rolling so far back into my head I can see my own spinal column.

Huh, I've never encountered this and didn't know it was a thing. Sounds like something I'd like as part of a body horror fic, but as unrequited love, it sounds kinda silly.

(Anonymous) 2018-04-01 09:49 pm (UTC)(link)
I’ve never heard of this trope, but at least it’s just petals, and not roses or something else thorny, or sharp faceted jewels, or live toads—my only knowledge of “throwing up magically created stuff” is from that one fairy tale where the nice daughter who shares her food with a beggar woman goes home and starts upchucking roses and diamonds, and the pissy daughter who tells the beggar to fuck off goes home and starts puking snakes and spiders.

Which makes me wonder if there’s any fanfic out there where you see your future beloved and cough up flower petals, then come face to face with your mortal enemy and spit a tarantula at them.

this sounds like what happens if Twilight fans try to write Harry Potter fic.

(Anonymous) 2018-04-01 11:40 pm (UTC)(link)
I signed up for a secret santa thing year before last, and my assigned recipient asked for a hanahaki AU and I literally had to google it to find out what it was. I did not enjoy writing that fic, but I grit my teeth and did it as well as I could. I didn't sign up for the event again, however.

(Anonymous) 2018-04-01 11:43 pm (UTC)(link)
...this particular kind of AU just sounds dumb.

What fandoms is this taking place at? Live-action? I'm usually into animated shows and video games, and this hasn't hit there yet.

This is my literal first time hearing about this, and I'm disbelieving but intrigued. It's usually live-action stuff that creates these sort of kinks. First soulmates, then omegaverse, now this. I wasn't much into omegaverse's weird forced gender dynamics, so I'm welcoming hanahaki as a change of pace for cliche-romance-fic-that-I'll-never-click-on-but-shows-up-everywhere. I'm positive that everything featuring it is just going to be super cheesy romance that doesn't realize how horrifying the concept is (which is a shame because I'd be down for horror), but ah well, it'll still be a refreshing breath of air.

To each of their own. I personally can't stand A/B/Os but hanahaki is My Shit these days. I guess I just love the romanticism of it all.

What the everloving fuck?

No. No, thank you.

I can usually suspend disbelief for some of the more outlandish fic concepts, but no.

Vomiting rose petals sounds terrible.

I'm also not a fan of colorblind until you meet your true love because I don't think the writers think through how different the world would be. Color is used for so many things. Signs and labels would be completely different. It would be really damn distracting for a while and what if you were in the middle of something requiring concentration when it happened? You might have to relearn some things because before you were relying on gradation and texture.
