Basic life skills like cooking, cleaning, making a budget, managing money, bank accounts and credit cards.

+1

It's honestly kind of bonkers that we don't get taught this.

This was basically Home Economics when I was in school (many moons ago). I have no idea why it's no longer a thing, probably because of school budget cuts. :(

When I was in school, there were lots of different home ec and industrial arts classes that focused on different things, and you were required to take one. I picked drafting, and it turned out to be surprisingly useful in my professional life.

Funnily enough, I DON'T think this should be taught in school. This is what parents are for and I personally would resent having to waste my time IN school learning something this banal.

That's assuming the parents have the time or inclination to teach it, or that they themselves have mastered such skills.

By the time I started school my parents had already taught me how to read and write, add and subtract, and even multiplication. I still didn't argue when teachers went over all of that from the beginning because not all of the children knew how to do it yet.

nayrt - Exactly. I already knew how to read before I started school. By the time I was in high school, my parents made sure I understood how to balance a checkbook and manage my savings account and ATM card. By college, I had my own credit card and understood about minimum payments and interest. But I was definitely in the minority in terms of my peers. Many parents don't necessarily do all that well, so of course they're not well equipped to teach their kids.

Or you have parents like mine. Who when told that their 4 year old daughter who already knew how to read would have to learn her ABCs in public school kindergarten like everyone else instead found a private school that would actually let me learn instead of going over things I already knew. What the hell is the point of having to go to class to learn things you already know?

Re: What is something that should be taught in all schools?

AYRT. Funnily enough I attended a private school too and I still had to put up with those lessons. Turns out that in about 120 students in my year there weren't enough who already knew how to read to form an advanced group. And that is my point, we are the exception and the schooling system has to work with all the students.

In an ideal world everyone should be taught according to their level and capacity, and I'm glad your parents found you a school that did that for you, but it isn't always feasible.

What's the point of having to go to class to learn things you already know? Nothing. There's no point other than complying with compulsory education laws. But sometimes there is no other option.

It's the same as when a student transfers schools and gets lessons on something they already learned before. They don't get to skip class until the teacher reaches some new material.

If parents were doing a decent job of this, you wouldn't see so many people who lack these banal basic life skills. But then, you can say the same thing about sex education.

Well, that automatically disadvantages kids whose parents work full time, or who just have shitty parents who don't care enough to teach them. School should give everyone an equal start, and if that means an hour a week to teach them how to make soup then so be it.

Re: What is something that should be taught in all schools?

(Anonymous) 2018-04-04 02:39 am (UTC)(link)
This. Not every kid is lucky enough to have parents who know this stuff, care about it enough to teach their kids, or are around enough to bother even if they wanted to.

THIS. My boyfriend's mother was a single parent who had to work, and even if she were a stay at home mother, she's a shitty cook and an idiot with money who always exceeds her budget. If it weren't for bf's grandparents, he'd have no clue how to do any of that stuff and no kid deserves to be punished just because their parents can't adult.

Proper use of the en-dash vs. hyphen, apparently, because I am just now learning this. At least I had the em-dash figured out.

Of course, this means nothing unless you're typing on a computer, which generally did not figure in my English classes growing up.

Critical thinking - in a flexible, non-dogmatic way.

I'm not even sure that it's possible to effectively teach that, but we should try more than we do.

I know this is taught in some schools, as I saw it when I was doing my internship for my MLS, but evaluating information sources. I see so many people who believe things and spout them off as if they are fact, but they are from a really biased and/or inaccurate source. Like my mother-in-law who accepts everything from Fox News as gospel truth. And spouted things like people from Puerto Rico are lazy because they haven't fully recovered from the hurricane. Or a friend who was saying something that has been proven false.

It's also tricky with that because there's been dramatic, dramatic change - over the last 30 years, over the last 10 years, even over the last 3-5 years. So even people who were educated on evaluating sources, their information and their instincts might have been developed in a media and information landscape that looked totally, completely different.

Some basic first aid and emergency response.

What you should and shouldn't do for different types of injuries, that certain fires can't be extinguished with water, that sort of thing.

Wait, you mean that isn't taught in all schools? It was a mandatory segment of our 7th grade science class.
