It bothers me but I try not to shy away from fandoms just because they're past their designated expiration date. If I want to write fic I'll write fic even if I know that it won't get comments because it's not a coffee shop AU, and maybe in another few years someone else will happen across the "dead" fandom and be happy to see a fic that isn't a coffee shop AU.

This though. Lack of popularity of a fandom doesn't dissuade me from writing fic.

Yes! This!

Also, I'm very particular about what I'll write for, and if a slow fandom sparks the muse, so be it. There's less pressure to try to be a BNF then, at least? Everything's chill... and the diehard one or two fans still sticking around REALLY love you.

This, there's nothing like the thrill as a reader of seeing new fic in a sparse fandom. I find if there's a lot of fic in a fandom, I get lazier about bothering to read it, even if it's good. But new fics to a little fandom, I'll read way more, and I tend to comment and kudos more, too.
