Re: Has fandom changed much in the past 10 years?

10 years ago was 2007. I was still required by fandom ettiquette to put a "warning" for anything involving homosexual anything (including boys kissing) on the header of all fic. granted, in 07 that was starting to be phased out, people were starting to really be of the "really? don't we ALL write and read slash? how is this still controversial?" attitude but many writers, especially posting on LJ, still warned for it just in case.

It's interesting that this was also the era that people remember as an awesome golden age of permissiveness and freedom

Well, you were more likely to have people yell at you for writing about how sinful it is for two men to hold hands, but it was also likely that others would defend you and recognize that the homophobe was full of shit. Nowadays if someone yells at you for writing something "sinful," people will either join in or ignore the spectacle out of fear they'll get yelled at next.

eh...it was and it wasn't. the real era of "omg slash is so taboo" is a few years earlier, I'd say very early 00s, but it was still lingering a bit around 07-08 while some fandoms were just. exploding with permissiveness and pushing boundaries. it kind of depended on the fandom. Kingdom Hearts fandom around that time was just bonkers, kinky shit everywhere to roll in like catnip.

Hooboy, the KH kinkmeme around late '07 used to make my eyes burn.
