I'm trying to write a fic where there are about to be messed up power plays and general messed up ways of treating people and I need some good music to help inspire it.

For context, A is normally "perfect", B is morally ambiguous, and my fic is gonna be dark!A & darker!B. They are both in positions of power, but C [just trying to make it to the top] comes along (in a way, C has power over them) and it's all a spiral down from there.

Any suggestions? Thanks!

Do you like Placebo? I feel like many of their songs are about messed up dynamics. Every You Every Me might be a bit overused... I've always liked the subtle, creepy desperation in Centrefolds.

Yes! I do like placebo (and that song! which I think I first heard on a fanfic for am unhealthy ship lol my youth) and I like the sound of
subtle x (creepy+desperation)^dark!

The album Hospice by The Antlers, but especially Kettering and Epilogue.

can't wait to listen! Do you recommend a sit through the album, or listen to those two first?

Maybe try those to see if you like their sound? Hospice is a concept album that uses terminal illness as a metaphor for an abusive relationship, and I love it to pieces, but it might not be for everyone.

Idk if this fits what you're going for but I think In Every Dreamhome a Heartache by Roxy Music is an underrated unhealthy dynamic song, though it more works for one party exploiting the other

Also, above anon suggested No Children by the Mountain Goats- I would also suggest The Oceanographer's Choice, Fault Lines, and Dilaudid as more personal fave messed up relationship songs - though a lot of the Mountain Goats music fits this theme lol
