They are raw peanuts cooked by boiling with a lot of salt. In SC, you can find stands on the side of the road of people selling them from HUGE boiling pots. You can eat them hot or cold.

It's a lot of fun. I've participated both in a team and as a volunteer before. It's by/for the local sports club.
