Re: Movie Club Discussion!
2. I didn't have a favorite or least favorite character, to be honest. I liked D.J. but I think that was just because of the actor. Maybe my least favorite was Weir because he was a bit annoying.
3. My favorite scene was them coming up on the Horizon. Mostly because Sam Neill had the same look of wonder he did in Jurassic Park. Cracked me up. And I liked the chompy arms they used to dock onto the ship. My least favorite scene was Weir trying to explain how the Event Horizon works. I hate the whole trope of someone explaining something and then someone goes "Explain it in English." Like, you know what layman's terms are dude. Use them. Sort of the same scene, when Weir is playing the recording. First off, why would you play them that scary ass recording. Secondly, NO ONE ON YOUR TEAM KNOWS LATIN? YOU DON'T KNOW BASIC LATIN?
4. The music was pretty meh to me. Not super memorable but it didn't take away from the movie. Very much a product of it's time.
5. I really liked the construction of the ship (the outside more than the inside). Wish we had seen more of that weird green, motherboard tunnel. That was really cool to look at. I also like their reasoning for the gel baths. Bit more interesting than just freezing people because of long trips. The CGI was pretty awful but seemed pretty good for the 90s. Also, I love how they could not decide how futuristic they wanted to go. They have super scanners and spaceships but still use CDs. xD

(Anonymous) 2018-04-07 08:15 pm (UTC)(link)Yeah, I definitely felt like I was just responding to the characters based on the actors who played them, more than on their actual specific characterization in the film.
Also, I couldn't stop remembering In The Mouths of Madness while watching it just because Sam Neill was in both and they had somewhat similar horror/insanity vibes (even though Mouths of Madness isn't sci-fi).

That's a good point! It's funny how easy it is to overlook the comparatively small changes and end up completely missing out on them.
Re: Movie Club Discussion!
Yeah, that kind of tech stuff is always so funny to me. They were certainly at the point where they could have used something that looked more futuristic. Some data crystals or whatnot.

But I really love Sam Neil too, so I was fine with DJ dying because Weir interested me more.
