As someone who read adult novels as a child, maybe nine or so, featuring abuse and horror, and was perfectly sheltered and safe otherwise, I kind of agree with one side of your story: A friendly child that is cared for may of course supplement their mental diet with media made for adults -- in fact, how else are you ever going to learn to "adult" otherwise?

But not all children are friendly to others, and not all adults are friendly to children. So supervision and care is an absolute must with regard to the 12-year-old. That is...clearly not happening, dude, and you know it.
