I didn't really get the hate even in her first season, to be honest. A great deal of the non-Doctor characters have been plot devices, not just her, so to hate her because of that seemed ridiculous.

The "plot device" accusation never made sense to me, especially once you get the full context of it. She wasn't super-special at all--she just made one choice at one point that had a bigger effect, just like...literally all of the other New Who companions??? We just saw hers a little out of order, but it's not much different from the Bad Wolf thing, really.

I'm not a fan but I don't dislike her either. I don't think she ever did anything to deserve hate. The worst you can say about her is that she was kinda generic.

Same.

Yeah. She'll never really be on my favourite list, but I don't dislike her, and there are certain scenes/episodes where she stands out to me as points where it shows there was greatness potential that they never fully took advantage of.

I didn't like her with Eleven because, as you said, she was just a plot device and rather boring. She really grew with Twelve and I ended up loving her. I'm not sure why she got all the hate after her growth. Maybe she was still kinda boring to some people or they just didn't like how her character developed.

Also some people really get rooted into their hatred of something. I feel like even if they DO see an improvement they're still going to die on that hill.

Yes, that's true, some people are really attached to their hatred ... that's weird to be honest. I'm the same as the ayrt : I didn't care a lot for her when she was with 11, there was something that gave the impression she was only there to serve The Doctor and nothing else. But she really came into her own, imho, with 12. She was flawed and not in a "adorable way that makes it not really a flaw but a quirk". I also have to give huge kudo to Jenna Coleman for making me love the character because she did a splendid job at portraying Clara.

She got caught up in the unstoppable Moffatness of Moffat and her character suffered a lot by assocation.

I liked her a lot personally. It's hard to tell how much of that is the character and how much is the actor, but on the other hand, it's not like that's exactly uncommon in the history of Doctor Who. She's good and cool and criticizing her for being a plot device.

At the same time, it's really, really hard to think about her without thinking about the impenetrable morass in which Moffat entombed her. The pointless and absurd metaplots, and the endless stories about how the Doctor harms the people around him and that's terrible and what makes the Doctor special and is the Doctor special and is it OK for him to be a jerk and wow smart women like him anyway even though he's a jerk and I don't know if you heard this but Moffat is a really smart jerk and likes women and so is the Doctor and wow isn't that interesting maybe we should have another storyline about being a really smart jerk who has to learn to stop being a jerk so women will like him and whether the Doctor hurts his companions again again let's tell the same story again.

And, really, I can't blame people for getting annoyed about that and disliking anything associated with it. And it's not like Moffat!fans have a leg to stand on in complaining - see for instance the continued grudge-holding that does as a matter of actual fact exist against Rose.

Yes, this. I like her in fic, I like her in short excerpts, but I could not stand the Moffatt Morass. I would love to have watched the Bill episodes too, but same problem. And yes, I'm coming back to Doctor Who for Thirteen.

(Plus, there's people that hate every companion!)

I'm the opposite I guess. I really liked her with Eleven (not shipping, but just as a companion) and didn't get the hate, but I couldn't stand her with Twelve. I had to force myself to finish season nine (nine was Twelve's first season right?) and I haven't watched the show since. Well, except for the Husbands of River Song special.

You missed out on Bill, then. Bill was the best.

(Anonymous) 2018-04-10 03:45 am (UTC)(link)
I've heard good things about Bill. But for some reason season eight (it was season eight, not nine - I got confused) pretty much killed my interest in the show. A couple of times I've thought about skipping over season nine and just watching ten and eleven, but every time I end up going "nah, maybe later."

I would have liked Clara better if there was less of her; I would have rather had one season of Clara and three of Bill and Nardole.

(Anonymous) 2018-04-09 11:47 pm (UTC)(link)
I mean. I thought she AND Rose were annoying Mary Sues.

(Anonymous) 2018-04-10 01:03 am (UTC)(link)
Fandom's hatred of her is what made me stop participating in DW fandom...

Luckily, I was able to break free of the show when she was gone because being able to participate in fandom is important to my personal experience...

(Anonymous) 2018-04-10 08:00 am (UTC)(link)
I adore her with Twelve. Favorite companion, favorite Doctor, fantastic dysfunctional relationship (yeah, I ship them). Coleman and Capaldi had great chemistry, and the Moffat meta or whatever Moffat haters call it didn't impinge on it at all for me. I didn't see Stephen Moffat, I saw Twelve and Clara, their rudeness and bravery and humor and mutual obsessiveness, their flaws (terrible adrenaline junkies, both of them, as well as lying liars who lied - Danny Pink deserved so much better, but I loved Clara for not being able to give up the Doctor).

Anyway, yeah, I don't get it, and when other fans talk about hating Clara (or sometimes Twelve), our perceptions are so incredibly different that I don't bother to engage. Neither one of us is going to change the other's mind. Also, sometimes misogyny is involved, and I have zero tolerance for that bullshit.

In short, if certain fans hate Clara, they can go do that with someone else because I'm not interested and it will just annoy me.
