Why shouldn't they be necessary? I mean, come on, is it really so much work to put a freaking warning on a fic? Geez.

Also, comparing fanfiction to published fiction is quite laughable.

Fanfiction is very amateur. I'm not saying every author in the world is genius or that every fanfic author is inferior, because that isn't true, but I just think it's silly to even compare books to fanfiction. There is a distinctive quality difference. And there is nothing holding anyone back from giving a simple "explicit content" in your summary. I mean, some people look for specific things like rape and incest and such so why not just state it so they find what they're looking for? If your only defense is that published books don't do the same, I don't see how in the world that is even relevant and is a pretty weak defense. It's hilarious some think it's so bad to give simple note because it might spoil the ~wondrous~ fanfic plot.

Sure lots of it is amateur, but no matter how bad the fic is, that doesn't change the intent. It's not a matter of quality.

And you know, sometimes I do find the 'notes' in summaries give away more than I want to know about the plot. Let me be surprised, walk in with no expectations, the way I would when opening a book by an author I don't know.

I still fail to see why a level of quality in writing should make a difference in warning use. By that level, Laurell K. Hamilton should be warning for bad porn, Stephanie Meyer should be warning for Sues, while anyone past some arbitrary line of quality gets to do whatever they want... yeah.

I'm different in this, but when I go into a book, I usually know what the gist of it is going to be about. Not all the details, but I don't pick up a random book just to read it because I'm feeling spontaneous. I have certain interests and some genres make my day more than others do. I don't read fanfic anymore, but when I did, I always knew what type I was looking for. It's just good to know what's in store, but not fullblown details. "Spoilers" for fics or books don't bother me because it's the process in getting there and seeing how it unfolds that matters than knowing about it before hand, in my opinion.

Like I said, not every author deserves to have their book published; Stephenie Meyer, to a lot of people. But to put it a different way, every book affects someone differently. And to be frank, her books ARE in the Teen section. What else can people expect, srsly.
