And then you go and stir up wank by e-mailing it to a family member, who then involves her mother. How could that possibly have seemed like a good idea? Even for lols? The only possible result is that poor Anon is going to lose all strength to take a shot at it (and the worst result of that would have been three-way embarrassment), and the poor couple are going to switch grocery stores because knowing someone is thinking of offering you a three-way and not knowing who it is trumps known embarrassing offer of sex by a long shot. If Alyson is uncomfortable talking about her sex life with her mother at all, that adds another layer of humiliation. Worse, now they might end up taking a bad view of their fans in general, when a one-person one-time offer is easier to shrug off than a secret admirer. Something that could have been simple blows up into drama. Everyone's made uncomfortable, because you couldn't restrain your holier-than-thou "must police fandom" impusles.
I'm assuming you didn't even consider the million-to-one possibility that they might be open to a threesome. Because you're such a "good person".
Yeah, you pretty much deserve whatever you get. Did no one hand you the "what happens in fandom stays in fandom" rule list at the door?
132: Okay? Good for you then. I sort of agree (seriously, if a ten year-old can buy a Laurell K. Hamilton novel, then nothing I write can possibly be that bad), but at the same time it's a courtesy thing. While Fandom has it's own cultural standard, I tend to take an attitude that it's better to fit it in the summary. Not as a list, but as a summary. If your rape scene has so little to do with the plot that it doesn't fit in the summary, maybe it's just a tiny bit gratuitous, yes? And if your story revolves around Gohan/Goten incest but that somehow escapes the summary, maybe you need to work on that summary thing. Though I do use warnings as sort of an ad, that would make more sense if there were a standard. Sometimes I want that 'cest fic/death fic/blood-play, and others will feel the same. But the one thing I avoid like mad is a deathfic, and the last time I stumbled on that accidentally it was incredibly depressing for both the death and because I couldn't bring myself to finish a damn good story. Still, if I'd seen a big ol' deathfic warning, I never would have picked it up, and that would have been a loss of eight chapters of good reading and a brand new kink.
I guess it's just one of those ymmv things.
In addition: People, please stop making video game/movie/TV parallels. There's not any, and it kind of makes me sick to my stomach to see the myth spreading.

My beef is that what we see/read/play affects us different depending on the medium. The "myth" (which really was a loose use of language and I apologize for that) is that these things are all equal in terms of impact based on content. In fandom this is especially pernicious, shown in the way movie ratings are used in fanfiction as they they have any real connection to the medium.
The premier example is visual porn and written erotica. Visual media pornography (from an admittedly American public opinion stand—not necessarily my own view) is held separate from other deemed "legitimate" works because of the impact it has on a person. We're very much affected by visual stimuli, and so porn is only available to certain people because of the effect it has on them. No matter how artistically it's done—even if it's just a normal plot-based movie that happens to have a sex scene, it's considered pornography. It's rated NC17and illegal to supply to those under that age.
Now I'm going to snag examples of professional written works of erotica—ranging from the Anita Blake series (which includes, S&M, B&D, bloodplay and more) to Anne Rice's retelling of Sleeping Beauty. There's no age limit on these works. Anyone with money can walk into a bookstore and purchase them. These books have more sex in them than could ever be fit into a feature-length movie, but because it's written the effect is different. What's (supposedly) only arousing in visual form becomes open to questions of characterization, philosophy, morality... anything the author cares to pack in there. That gives it more depth, and therefore it's more acceptable. Unless these books are printed with images, they're not restricted.
Video games are... admittedly odd in the sex department. They combine both of the above mediums (thus the rating M for Mature), but when a game aims to arouse it's generally just for the sake of it. Often it falls flat on its face. The point of a videogame is to play—I've yet to meet anyone who will buy a game and play for three hours just to masturbate to a brief full-body nude image or sex scene. They tend to get shouted down for the violence—which is another deal entirely from sex. Games have a focus of playing—they're not intended to place you in the other character's shoes or to make you feel their personal angst (for the most part). They're certainly not supposed to do that for the characters who are most likely to be assaulted. Because they're a visual medium they get treated similarly to movies, but the parallel isn't exact. I wish the general public would see that.
(At this point, I'd like to challenge someone to make a game about sex. Not just using it to titillate, but about sex. With a score card.)
To sum up something that could be a long long long post, the medium something utilizes has a lot to do with how we're affected by it. Movie ratings exist because visual depictions theoretically affect us enough that we may be traumatized by it. Books affect us in different ways—I'm more likely to be traumatized by a well-written break-up scene than the same by any couple on the silver screen. On the other hand, I can't watch a slasher movie but I love to read them. I'll take a movie death scene any day over a written one; there are books on my shelves I'll never finish reading or reread because of that. I played fighter games as a kid and cheered when I ripped someone's head off, but cried like the 16 years old I was last time I saw Bambi.
I understand that published fiction =/= fan fiction. Fandom has a convention of rating fic for the sake of the discerning reader. I'm perfectly fine with that. But I strongly believe that we need to find a rating system that's suited to our medium. It should be based on impact, not "I use the word penis, and saying penis is just like showing a penis so it's NC17 NO KIDDIES ALLOWED GAIS".
Okay, I'll shut up now. Rant over. ^^;
