Two points

One, the first season is a little shaky quality-wise and not necessarily a perfect representation of things & stuff

Two, I mean... look, with the best will in the world, Jared Padalecki and Jensen Ackles really aren't the leading actors of their generation, you know what I mean? Getting attached to an extremely long-running series that's still popular with fans and that pays them beaucoup bucks and that is going to live on in peoples' affections for a long time really isn't such a bad fate, as the world goes.

Yeah, I don't watch Supernatural, but a steady gig that pays the bills+ is not nothing. It's also a much more stable situation than it would be if they were doing a lot of films. It's perfect for people with young families and the relatively consistent scheduling allows them to do other things during production breaks, if they so desire.

15 years in TV sounds like a successful career to me.

(Anonymous) 2018-04-11 01:18 am (UTC)(link)
I don't watch the show, but from what I've heard, it's pretty popular. 15 years in a popular tv show *is* a career, and the thing is, they appear to be doing a huge amount of supernatural fandom related things outside of just filming the show, like multiple charity works and opening businesses and doing cons and stuff. I imagine this will support their post supernatural careers for decades after the show is done. They are celebrities after all.

They have a post supernatural path, it just might not be the one you approve of.

They're almost certainly raking in cash, but I think OP's point is that none of them are going to be able to get major roles in serious film/TV from now on. They're so strongly associated with Supernatural that they'll probably be relegated to cameos. It's not that they don't have anything to be grateful for, just that if acting is truly their passion this may not be where they wanted to end up.

But if they really thought the MCU or other blockbuster roles were going to come, they would have quit when Ackles was rumoredly getting those type of offers. They keep signing contract after contract, they knew they weren't destined for huge mainstream success after season 4.

Serious roles doesn't just mean blockbuster roles.

I think they knew serious character actor or indie roles weren't going to come either. Hallmark or CBS crime dramas were probably going to be their only other options, might as well stay on SPN and milk the convention circuit for all it's worth.

They were never on track to have amazing careers. And there have been ups and downs. After season 5, people thought it should end there, but then one of the newer seasons was praised as really good.

(Anonymous) 2018-04-11 01:28 am (UTC)(link)
Aside from a few good episodes, I honestly wasn't a fan of the first three seasons, so I would've only had fond memories of seasons four and five if they'd ended it when originally planned. And maybe the memories wouldn't have been great because I didn't like the way season five ended. Given all the meta episodes, I think they're well aware that SPN's gonna "haunt" them.

I agree with the sentiment in a few ways but the show's syndicated now. They get away with charging hundreds of dollars for a 30 second meet and greet and awkward photo and charging insane prices for cons. The cast will probably be just fine.

Michael Weatherly seems to be doing okay.

(Anonymous) 2018-04-11 02:07 am (UTC)(link)
He was on NCIS for 13 years before moving on (and he was on Dark Angel with Jensen Ackles before).

David Boreanaz seems to be doing fine, too.

The thing you have to remember is that there are fans who never engage in the fandom side of things, so they have no idea about the drama and the wank and about the same number of viewers watched last season (12) as watched season 5 (season 12's average number of viewers is higher than 6, 7, 8, and 10). I stopped watching after season 4, but I don't begrudge other people still wanting to watch. And as long as the network, the viewers, and the cast still want the show on, I don't really see that there's a problem. I think it's possible they won't do much after Supernatural (though that may be by choice), but it's also possible that any one of them will get a new series right away.

about the same number of viewers watched last season (12) as watched season 5

I'm a little skeptical of that stat - I think you might be comparing day-of viewers in season 5 to day of plus DVR in season 12?

I mean, even to come close is incredible, obviously

ayrt

Yes, but before 2014, Live+7 numbers weren't standard and not necessarily reported (the networks requested Nielsen start them in 2012) and season 5 was 2009-2010 - almost a decade ago. Nielsen started doing C3 in 2007, but that was actually for the commercials.

Michael Weatherly is a good comparison. A soap actor who lucked into a long running show, it's a lot nicer than doing web soaps and schlocky movies that get sold to Hallmark or Lifetime.

You know--look at William Shatner. He did pretty damn well for himself *despite* the type casting and being forever associated with Star Trek (and a much worse actor than Jensen or Misha...although maybe on a par with Jared...hehehe.)

Exactly! I thought of him too, and I think OP is just petty. Their celebrity status can be made into almost anything else if they wish it, after SPN is done with. Which I hope is a long way into the future.

But they don't want to quit. Why would they anyway, it's a steady income, they have fame without being hounded by the paps and tabloids, and they will always make bank from conventions. Sounds like a pretty good gig.

(Anonymous) 2018-04-11 02:25 am (UTC)(link)
You never know. It seems unlikely all three of them will go on to amazing success, but whether any of them become strongly associated with a different popular thing is going to be down mostly to luck - not so much the luck of them landing the part but luck that the project turned out to be popular. Sometimes someone who you can't imagine playing anyone but [character] goes on to become a completely new character in people's minds.

(Anonymous) 2018-04-11 04:22 am (UTC)(link)
Considering the competition and difficulty of landing a gig in hollywood, they actually made the smart move sticking with Supernatural. They seem to have a lot of fun making the episodes, and they're making a ton of money without having to worry about the well drying out anytime soon.

(Anonymous) 2018-04-11 05:12 am (UTC)(link)
Eh. I'm watching the first season now and thinking that it's just as well these guys got a solid role in a long running TV show while they had the chance. There's no guarantee they would've had lots of other roles in other projects, never mind roles as lucrative as Supernatural has been. There's many a relatively obscure actor who made their living off one role in one TV show.

(Anonymous) 2018-04-11 05:21 pm (UTC)(link)
Where I set up my fan-tent, we're a lot of people still loving SPN to death and looking forward to every episode. I wonder where you are where you're this exposed to people who just hate it? It seems so illogical.

(Anonymous) 2018-04-25 04:33 pm (UTC)(link)
Why would they quit? They enjoy what they do, they're making money, and J2M has like a friendship to rival all others (and not even going to comment on Jensen and Misha's relationship, because Jesus talk about relationship goals). So why should it matter if the show continues forever and ever? I'll still watch.
