It is almost like different people have different opinions on them. Not sharing your opinion, OP, does not make fans "out of touch with reality." Not a fan myself. But you clearly have issues if you are this invested in people liking something you don't like.

Ehhhhhhhhhh

I'm not invested in this, at all, but I can also definitely see where they're coming from? It's a fairly inconsequential issue in the grand scheme of things, obviously. And I agree that on some level, these things are subjective.

At the same time, I think there's a point where things stop being subjective and do become unreasonable and almost detached from reality. That's hard to articulate. But if someone is really saying that AOS is an all-time masterpiece of televisual art, I don't think there's any remotely reasonable standard by which that could be true.

I'm skeptical as to whether anyone actually said that. But I personally think media opinions are at least mostly subjective. There is a small amount of artistic objectivity to it. But art for the most part is a subjective thing.

I think that there's a strong element of subjective, emotional response to art, yes. But I don't think that's the totality of art. There are things like technique, and also (more importantly) things like... I don't know, maybe call it interpretive depth or something like that, and while those things aren't necessarily quantifiable, I don't think they're really subjective.

So, that's my point of view why I think there are times where people can make statements that are fundamentally unreasonable.

(also, I'm increasingly uncomfortable with the idea of objectivity and subjectivity as binary qualities, so that plays a role here too)

Fitzsimmons is the worst. God, I hate that pairing so much it's ruining the show for me. Their friendship was cute but they have no romantic chemistry and the writing is atrocious. Mack and Elena are the better pairing by far.

I liked them in the beginning. Fitz annoys me now, though.

JUSTICE FOR AGENT CARTER

If ABC had put a fraction of the weight it did with AoS behind Peggy (and also hadn't tried to force a terrible love triangle and also Dr. Strange stuff on the plot)... I'm just still really bitter that AoS is ~still going strong and I'm not sorry about it.

(Anonymous) 2018-04-11 11:25 am (UTC)(link)
Actually, they did put a lot of weight behind Agent Carter, and invested a lot of money, and the show still bombed because it wasn't something that a large enough group of people wanted to watch.

I absolutely wanted to watch Peggy Carter do amazing things and create SHIELD and have strong relationships with a number of other women. I did not want to watch what happened in the second season, where her team consisted of only men, at least two of whom were in love with her (and one was engaged already and there's few things I hate more for cheap drama than a cheating plot). The first season did much better for a reason.

^^ THIS. First season was so fun, and the second season was everything fans didn't want.

I enjoy the show and dip into the fandom, but I don't see any AoS fans harassing the actors or writers, or having giant conspiracy theories about shipping or whatever (looking at you, various other fandoms like Supernatural or Sherlock or Teen Wolf...) I'm pretty happy with a fandom where "overinvested fan" is just someone who talks about this show as the best show ever.

I don't get it. I watched a few seasons and read descriptions of the bits people think are so great and...whatever bakes your cookies, but it just doesn't sound that interesting when there's a lot of really great TV to watch. Or even shit that's mediocre but has characters I've bonded with more.

(Anonymous) 2018-04-11 04:30 pm (UTC)(link)
You're reaching, dude.

If I say, "This is the best superhero show on television," it doesn't mean AoS is ~a flawless masterpiece~.

It means exactly what I say: Compared to other superhero shows, I find it the best. (Perhaps precisely because the characters are a little understated, too.)
