Ew, yikes. I was thinking of getting my cousin these books since he's younger and has a dog named Hank, but I can probably do better than that. Thanks for the head's up.

I mean, they are still good books. Get them from the library.

He did WHAT?!

Those things were played over audio book all the time for my family on long road trips.

My childhood...

Learn to seperate the artist from the creation? It ins't like he is out murdering people.

Learn to separate the artist from the creation. Just because someone's a murderer doesn't mean they can't be an inspired talent.

(Anonymous) 2018-04-11 01:37 am (UTC)(link)
You say that, but it's difficult. Even though Rurouni Kenshin was my favorite manga, thinking about it kinda disturbs me now.

Some people can't separate the two.

DA

...I think that anon was being facetious.

The anon they're replying to is saying to separate art from author, but at the same time not to separate it if it's murder.

(Anonymous) 2018-04-11 02:34 am (UTC)(link)
I must've replied to the wrong one. Was on mobile

(Anonymous) 2018-04-11 01:06 am (UTC)(link)
How the heck does that work.

If you think that it would be a problem if he was out murdering people, then you can't also say that you should separate the art from the artist. If you separate the art from the artist, then it wouldn't matter if he was a mass-murdering kitten eater, because his kitten-eating would still be separate from his art. On the other hand, if there are some things where you can no longer separate the art from the artist, then at that point we're just arguing over where you draw the line.

And I can completely understand why some people might draw the line here. Even if you don't.

Sometimes that is the best thing to do, but in this case it doesn't work, since in this case the author's racism and homophobia is present in the creation itself.

(Anonymous) 2018-04-11 04:57 am (UTC)(link)
Yeah, I try to separate art from artist but sometimes it's right there in the work, and sometimes the author hits a hot button which means your brain just won't view the work separately, especially with living artists. (Orson Scott Card is an example for me - once you're saying all lesbians should be sent to rape camps, I can't help but take that personally.)

That makes me sad :( I was a little gay Texan child who grew up on these books and was obsessed with them

I hadn't thought about these books in ages. I loved them when I was a kid - they were my first introduction to an unreliable narrator. But looking back...the coyotes are pretty terrible. And I'm not surprised that the author is a terrible person.
What a disappointment.

Aw dammit... the first book of this was one of my go-to audiobooks as a kid, and I always wanted to catch up on the story someday. Reckon, that'd probably be a very awkward listening experience. I do recollect Hank being very adverse to any 'unmanly' emotion from the poor wee Drover. And the coyotes were an absolute mess. It's sad to reminisce on flawed childhood favourites. :(
