What do you do for a living?

(Anonymous) 2018-04-13 11:30 pm (UTC)(link)
Do you enjoy your job (or being a student)?

I'd like to be a service desk rep for a forward thinking, modern company, but those are the bastards who never want to reply to my resume.

I'm a housekeeper at a hotel. I'm doing it as I save money for grad school/look for a job in my field. Its alright but I wish people would be less blatantly judgmental and disrespectful about it.

I have a lot of respect for people who work those jobs. Hell, I tried getting one of those jobs, but where I live it's one of those "if you know someone they get you in" type of things. Good luck with your work & getting into grad school!

I work as a production planner at a company that makes a certain type of clothes (it is super specific so don't want to say what). It is super challenging but my work environment is SO much better than it was in my last (shitty) job.

it's the most unrewarding soul destroying shit in the universe that leaves me with a general hatred of people

My job is a big 'ol secret.

I'm self-employed, I own my own company. I travel most of the year, and it involves lots of long hours and difficult manual labor outside, where I manage teams of people who are using/learning to use the big mechanical devices I and other companies build. Then for the other portion of the year I design the big things and me and a few dudes build them at my shop.

Yes, I mostly enjoy my job. It doesn't leave me a ton of free time and I get hurt a lot, and the lifestyle (traveling all the time) is really isolating and stressful.

People think it sounds fun bc I get to go to all these different places, but it's really not like that.

That does sound difficult and not at all glamorous, but I rather envy you for being so self-motivated as to run your own company.

I work/volunteer with AmeriCorps. It's kind of like the PeacCorps for the US. I get paid, but i'm a VISTA - Volunteer in service to America.

I'm currently working with the local fire department, creating a community risk assessment and then risk reduction plan. Probably gonna take a couple years, but i really like working for the department and for the Chief.

I'm fairly terrified (never done anything remotely like this in my life), but it's damn interesting.

That sounds exciting. Do you travel a lot?

Not really? Except Chief is totally open to personal development and stuff, so this past week (Sun-Thurs), we were in Virginia at Model Performance in Community Risk Reduction Symposium.

Lots of info! I think it really tuned Chief in to how much data and stuff i'm having to deal with, and everything i - we - *don't* know. It was good.

I'm doing something similar in Maryland in September at the National Fire Academy, and any classes or symposia or anything out there he thinks will help, he's willing to send me to. So that's cool.

I worked with Americorps about a year ago. My job was teaching literacy at a preschool. The pay was awful but it's the only job I've had that I've truly enjoyed.

Does your program offer the education award as well?

I work in thrift. My salary is good and I like my job but it entails 7 hours of standing every 8-hour day, which hurts my back. Also my two other department co-workers are nuts and fight with each other all the time, and I wish they got along better.

Detective. Sort of, as trite as it sounds it's more a calling then anything. Without it I'd probably be a NEET or something.

I'm an accountant. I like numbers and the organization of numbers, so sure. I wanted to be a lab tech, but life, so here I am with my MBA and shuffling spreadsheets for a living. It's not exciting by any means, but there's something nice about having a job where if you fuck up it's reasonably easy to fix.

I work in a public library, but I’m not a librarian yet, although I plan to go to grad school so I can eventually be a children’s librarian. I like most of the work, most of the patrons, and all of my coworkers with the exception of my weekend boss, who, to be fair, seems like a bad boss rather than an evil person.

I work with adults with developmental disabilities. I do a lot of paperwork but I work directly with clients too. I enjoy my job.

In my second year of university, and I like it fine. But I definitely don't wanna be a professional-student, you know, go on to do more and more of it. Once I'm done I will be done!
