What's this "original version" nonsense? Mulan was a folktale with a number of different versions, pretty sure the ones I read did not involve suicide/rape/forced harem.

I've seen a version of the folktale where she becomes one of the emperor's concubines/wives. But I don't know if that is one of the earlier versions or not.

The 'original version' they're using seems to be a mangled version The Sui-Tang Romance, though even there, they're making several mistakes - Mulan was a subject of the Khan, not the Tang Emperor, from the start, for instance.

The earliest known version, the Ballad of Mulan, had her return to her hometown, where her family were all alive and well, and resume her life (presumably marrying a local man, though that's never mentioned in the relatively short poem).

Also, if I were going to build on the Sui-Tang romance, it wouldn't be the tragic ending. It would be how Mulan's sex came out - the Khan's daughter, also a warrior woman, attempts to seduce her, and they become the best of friends after Mulan reveals her sex. Make one small change ('yeah, I know'), and it's fun. >_>
