It's possibly worth noting that the 'weird universe shift' is pre-existing and very popular Star Trek canon, so while I can see why you thought it came of left-field, that bit was definitely Trek being Trek.

I was suspecting it was (all my knowledge of Star Trek comes from occasional gifsets people post and some popcultural osmosis).
I just really don't like those things in general (I can't stand it in comics either for example, and it's very popular in those as well). Mostly because they always end up as huge, plot-hole-y messes where too many plotlines open up and end up not or only half-heartedly resolved. (Imo, this happened to some extent in Discovery as well.)
But it's more a matter of personal taste, really. Universe shifts, like time travel etc. are usually a love it or hate it thing.
