I've always seen it the other way around.
Dawson and Joey decided they were soulmates when they were young, and I don't think their adult relationship could have lived up to that ideal.

I think Pacey and Joey always knew that their relationship would require some effort. Pacey also had a refreshing awareness of his own immaturity in his teenage years. Joey and Dawson both suffered from that "I'm not like other teenagers" attitude, while also having tantrums because the person they liked kissed someone else, etc. Yes, their high school relationship was doomed, but they both then had the opportunity to learn from that and grow up.
