Narsus and Alfarīd(I had to copy the name from the Wiki because I can never remember it) apparently got engaged in the novels shortly before an even bigger spoiler that made me reconsider continuing to follow the series.

oh, hm.

Years ago, my anime mentor sold me on Narsus->Daryoon almost a year before I'd even seen the canon, so I can't really get behind Narsus and Alfarīd either.

Ha, yeah, that's my preferred ship (if onesided) as well.

I just can't get behind a pairing between a girl who is basically obsessed with the older man for saving her, keeps proclaiming him her true love and him in turn basically ignoring her... until he suddenly out of the nowhere gets engaged to her. Huh.

it reminds me a little of Furuba, with how Ayame was married off to his shop assistant (can't think of her name, began with M?) when just pairing him with Shigure or Hatori would have made so much more sense.

I never followed Furuba that far because I was irritated at the "totally planned from the start" reveal that Akito was female and I dropped it.
I didn't really buy that it was planned from the start. I got the impression that the mangaka got a sudden surge of "ew gay" feelings halfway through which led to the gender change and pairing off everyone in neat little het relationships would fit in with that quite well. No clue if there's any truth in it and only the mangaka knows but that's what it felt like to me.

Yeah, I had the same sort of feeling. (I kept up with manga summaries after watching the anime.)
