I've never seen a gun store in a shopping mall either.

I grew up in Washington State, which is pretty liberal, and I'm honestly not sure where you would have gone to get a gun. I know the Walmarts used to carry rifles... but you can't even get a gun at a pawn shop in WA anymore.

I currently live in Idaho where gun ownership is a way of life but you still have to go out of your way to get a gun. We got a Cabela's a couple years ago and that is the most mainstream place I can think of that carries guns. Otherwise you still have to go to a pawn shop or an actual gun shop, neither of which are generally part of a mall or even a shopping strip. Although that could just as easily be coincidence as zoning/regulations.
