Maybe next time be a bit more specific? I guess you couldn't have known that you wouldn't ship Klance until after you started watching the show, but you could have asked about a big fandom without too much a/b/o.

"a big fandom without too much a/b/o"

Is there such a thing?

Eh. It's always worth asking? ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

LOL!

Hard agree, OP. I’m still working my way up to watching the series, thanks to knowing just how bitter a disappointment the fandom is going to be.

For a bonus challenge round, pick Hunk or Pidge as your favourite character. Pidge gets a bit more attention than Hunk thanks to fans headcanoning the character as trans or non-binary, but still. Hope you weren’t wanting to see either of them in your fanworks.

And then there's me, who ships Shiro/Ulaz, with less than 200 fics on AO3 even with the a/b/o. *g*

Who would be sadistic enough to actively encourage someone to get involved in that dumpster fire of a fandom?

(Anonymous) 2018-04-26 01:48 pm (UTC)(link)
as someone in the fandom that ships absolutely no one on the show it IS possible to find a pretty decent amount of gen fic and I say this as someone that mostly spends their time on tumblr, not AO3. That said, your best bet in that case is to find a few blogs that reblog gen only. There are also several blogs that do nothing but go through AO3 and collect VLD stories and give you a brief run down of them all once a week which makes it so much easier to find stories you like. Those types of blogs wade through the muck and collect all the good bits in one place so you don't have to. Otherwise you're stuck swimming in a very sticky, sweaty sea of shipping and shipping wars with the gen stuff drowned in the overwhelming surge of Sheith and Klance. Not gonna lie, its a hard fandom to find a good place to float in because its ridiculously over the top with its shipping obsessions but it is possible.

OP

I have no idea how I would even start undertaking this. My tumblr is basically empty, and when I search for stuff it's always endlessly repeating itself.

I prefer gen, but I don't mind the shipping. But as I said in a comment below, 4000+ fics is a disappointingly low number when coming from really big fandoms. It would have been less disappointing if I'd had different expectations, you know? Had I gone in thinking "oh, the size of this fandom is somewhere in the middle range", I would have been perfectly okay with those numbers.

AO3 gen filter

[personal profile] headspacedad 2018-04-26 02:02 pm (UTC)(link)
try the link in this post, nonnie. The lovely original blogger came up with a filter that sorts through AO3 fic for gen content only, no pairings, and the amount it turns up is pretty massive. You can hopefully find plenty of what you're looking for there if you're looking for gen and if you want a specific pairing maybe it will give you a place to at least safely start from. I haven't used it much but so far its worked beautifully for me. (I don't know about the a/b/o filter on it lol but I'm pretty sure since its non-pairing that shouldn't pop up much)

Thanks for the link, but our take on "massive" is rather different. Coming from bigger fandoms, 4000+ fics is still a disappointingly low turnout. Also, it's pretty much exactly the number of fics I've already found on my own, using my filters.

I do appreciate the effort and your reply, though!

ah, sorry to disappoint then. I have to be in the right mood to get into mass fanfiction reading so for me 4000+ gen stories to sort through would take me forever and seems like a great deal to me. Its a pretty eclectic community here at F!S though. Maybe someone in it can point you at some fandoms that have the kind of bulk you're looking for!
