as someone in the fandom that ships absolutely no one on the show it IS possible to find a pretty decent amount of gen fic and I say this as someone that mostly spends their time on tumblr, not AO3. That said, your best bet in that case is to find a few blogs that reblog gen only. There are also several blogs that do nothing but go through AO3 and collect VLD stories and give you a brief run down of them all once a week which makes it so much easier to find stories you like. Those types of blogs wade through the muck and collect all the good bits in one place so you don't have to. Otherwise you're stuck swimming in a very sticky, sweaty sea of shipping and shipping wars with the gen stuff drowned in the overwhelming surge of Sheith and Klance. Not gonna lie, its a hard fandom to find a good place to float in because its ridiculously over the top with its shipping obsessions but it is possible.

I have no idea how I would even start undertaking this. My tumblr is basically empty, and when I search for stuff it's always endlessly repeating itself.

I prefer gen, but I don't mind the shipping. But as I said in a comment below, 4000+ fics is a disappointingly low number when coming from really big fandoms. It would have been less disappointing if I'd had different expectations, you know? Had I gone in thinking "oh, the size of this fandom is somewhere in the middle range", I would have been perfectly okay with those numbers.
