I get where you're coming from, but this is the equivalent of, say, a show about two girls named Ali. But instead of spelling them both Ali, as they legally spell their names, you decide you spell one of them as Allie, just to differentiate them.

Peoples names =/= character's names that could be spelled differently depending of the transliteration system.

And the original official spelling of several names has ben changed (Sala, Sara; Mila, Mira, Milla; Maccachin, Makkachin) and officialy Kubo has used "Yuuri" at least once to differentiate Yuri K. from Yuri P., so I don't see the issue here.

But Yuri has always been Yuri, and we aren't talking about some random side character. We're talking about the protagonist who is the titular character. The series is Yuri on Ice, and he is the Yuri in question.

And talking about Yuri and Yuri gets confussing as hell, so of course fandom found a way to avoid the constant confusion (and that one of the creators uses it too when writting in romaji may be a good sign that is a good option).

I mean, fandom is objectively wrong on this, and so would the creators be objectively wrong. I agree it's confusing, but that's sort of the joke. Would be much more accurate - and honestly, from what I've seen in fandom, more common - to call them Japanese Yuri/Russian Yuri, or Yuri K./Yuri P.

Objectively wrong? Do you know there's more than one romanization system, right? And that no one is more right than the others?

And you're probably bsting here, because most of the fandom doesn't use any of those. People either stick to only talk only about one Yuri or use the Yuuri and Yuri or Yuri and Yurio distinction (though Yurio stans hate that one) instead of + K. or P. or including nationalities.

And “sort of the joke” only works in spoken language. In written language in Japanese there’s no much joke, since their names are not written the same way so there’s no confusion... oh, which is exactly the same thing people do in English.

What in the world strikes you as BS about Yuri Katsuki's canon romanization, which is used in the show's very title, as well as clearly being his professional global identity used on television and in his media profiles, being Yuri and not Yuuri?

This is just a matter of Japanophile fans thinking they are being cute and "more accurate" by writing his name "Yuuri". It's not more accurate. It's stupid and wrong to suggest his name isn't or should not be romanized as "Yuri". And I'm in the fandom, I don't see this more often than I see people spell his name correctly.

I'm not even sure what your last point is, or what you're suggesting in regards to people doing the same in English. Most of the series takes place internationally where they are, in canon, speaking English and Yuri would be going by the English spelling.

When you're calling the authors wrong for using other romanization for the sake of clarity you've to admit you aren't right.

And official romanization are just one option out of many and in this case no one is saying it isn't accurate.

People just chose something else in the fandom for the sake of clarity. Why the hell does that bother you so much?

Look, people use Yuuri and Yuri mostly to make fic writing easier. Do what you want, but I'm not going to read any fic where they're the Japanese Yuri/Yuri K. and the Russian Yuri/Yuri P. The rampant epithets and misuse of Yurio are bad enough as it is.
