Didn’t Kubo flat-out say the romanization would be Yuuri? I’ll give you that the Victor/Viktor stuff is whatever, but I’m pretty sure “Yuuri” is correct.

No, she didn't. Think about the title for a second... "Yuri on Ice", not "Yuuri on Ice".

She probably started doing it because she saw fans spelling it that way online.

Maybe though I don't think she spends much time reading stuff in a language she doesn't speak. She still acknowledges that spelling as a valid option anyway.

No, she does it because that’s generally how you write the name Yuuri in one of the romanization systems.

It’s called ‘Yuri on Ice’ because it’s a story about the two Yuris (they’re both represented by the title; it’s in the very first trailer that this is a story of two Yuris—and to be strictly accurate, the Yuri used in the title is actually Russia Yuuri, because it’s the katakana spelling).

So both Yuuri and Yuri are accurate. But only Yuri is official. If that makes sense.
