if it's biiiiiig and you live somewhere southish, there's easily a good chance it flew in through an open door and isn't the precurser of an infestation. but if there is a colony somewhere, it's most likely in a dark, damp place like inside the walls so getting rid of them takes bait traps. there's tons of advice if you google it, and skip past all the pest-control companies to actual articles. if more show up, a good landlord should be willing to have a pest-control pro do an inspection and determine the size of the problem.

they're not as common up north were I am but I've lived in some shitholes and people bring them from other parts of the country, mostly German roaches. those just don't go away without a thorough full-building bombing.

can't help you with the phobia, though. that's for an educated professional.
