Cockroach DDDD:

(Anonymous) 2018-04-26 02:29 am (UTC)(link)
I saw a cockroach in my apartment. I'm from somewhere where cockroaches aren't a thing. I know logically I am much bigger than it, and realistically he's probably harmless and just, you know, trying to survive and stuff. But I already have a bit of an insect-phobia when they are in my home, my safe space. These fuckers are fucking huge and I'm literally so jumpy right now.

I vacuumed him up (can't bear to kill them directly, I'm a wimp) and then was flustered for the next half hour until I worked up the courage to drag my vacuum to the dumpster and dump the contents into a garbage bag (it's bagless, and it was so bad for me I didn't even want to see it, or risk it jumping out back into my apartment or exploding in my face or whatever roaches do). Now I hear if you've seen one roach, that means there are a billion of them in every corner of your place.

I'm not messy, and I just did a massive clean once I finally got the roach out. Vacuumed, washed counter tops, etc. I've sent a message to my landlord, too.

Any advice for me? Whether for keeping roaches out, and also not being such a bug-phobic mess? I'm still shaking.

I don't want to downplay your worries, but the occasional roach is a sad fact of life, especially in apartment buildings where you have a lot of people living close together with varying levels of mess and hygiene. This goes double if you live down South or someplace where it's warm year round. Your landlord is probably shaking his/her head and having a chuckle over the tenant who panicked because they saw one cockroach.

That said, keeping your living space clean obviously goes a long way. Don't let human food or food debris sit out on counters. Don't let dishes or anything that holds standing water sit overnight.

if it's biiiiiig and you live somewhere southish, there's easily a good chance it flew in through an open door and isn't the precurser of an infestation. but if there is a colony somewhere, it's most likely in a dark, damp place like inside the walls so getting rid of them takes bait traps. there's tons of advice if you google it, and skip past all the pest-control companies to actual articles. if more show up, a good landlord should be willing to have a pest-control pro do an inspection and determine the size of the problem.

they're not as common up north were I am but I've lived in some shitholes and people bring them from other parts of the country, mostly German roaches. those just don't go away without a thorough full-building bombing.

can't help you with the phobia, though. that's for an educated professional.
