They're first cousins who grew up not knowing each other at all. That is extremely borderline as to whether or not it "counts" as incest.

Sorry if it squicks you, but I don't think this is a case where there's a right and wrong answer.

(Anonymous) 2018-04-26 11:25 pm (UTC)(link)
Yeah, cousins who grow up together hook up. Marrying your cousin is legal in many places.

(Anonymous) 2018-04-26 11:53 pm (UTC)(link)
Well, then, if you're from a place that it's legal, don't tag it. If you're from a place that it is illegal, tag it.

(Anonymous) 2018-04-26 11:45 pm (UTC)(link)
Whether they grew up not knowing of each other or not does not make blood relation irrelevant or lesser. They are not less first cousins for that.

(Anonymous) 2018-04-26 11:47 pm (UTC)(link)
No, of course not, but some people get particularly squicked by that aspect of incest IME.

(Anonymous) 2018-04-26 11:58 pm (UTC)(link)
I'm not sure that I follow. What part is squicking people the most?

I ever were to produce fic/art like that, I'd just tag first cousins and closer as incest and the particular blood relation of the pairing and call it a day.

(Anonymous) 2018-04-27 12:00 am (UTC)(link)
I think different people are squicked by different things. Some people are squicked by the blood relationship, some people are squicked by people growing up together as part of the same family. It can vary.

(Anonymous) 2018-04-27 12:03 am (UTC)(link)
Ah! Thank you for clarifying.

I'm uncomfortable with both scenarios, really.

(Anonymous) 2018-04-27 05:51 am (UTC)(link)
Unless you're into m-preg, blood relations are kind of irrelevant with two male characters and emotional incest would actually be much more skeevy.

(Anonymous) 2018-04-26 11:49 pm (UTC)(link)
Uh, incest isn't about sexual relationships between people who grew up together, it's about people who are biologically related. It doesn't matter if two cousins grew up on different planets. They're still cousins.

(Anonymous) 2018-04-26 11:54 pm (UTC)(link)
nayrt but sure, biological incest. But to me, and I should think most people, it's not really the blood relation that's icky, it's the fact that you had a familial relationship and grew up together, and then made it sexual. That's what is squicky.

I really could not care less if two cousins who did not grow up together or even know each other previously fucked, especially if they aren't having any kids together (as a same-sex couple wouldn't).

(Anonymous) 2018-04-26 11:57 pm (UTC)(link)
Proof of most people?

Because "blech" and I've asked a few others and got the same reaction

(Anonymous) 2018-04-27 12:03 am (UTC)(link)
When people talk about why incest is wrong, they usually bring up two points: one, you grew up together and that's gross, because the relationship you have with your siblings should not be a sexual one. Two, you're going to have jacked-up babies.

The second point is always brought up. With a same-sex couple, this would be a complete non-issue.

(Anonymous) 2018-04-27 12:02 am (UTC)(link)
I think they're both icky, for different reasons.

(Anonymous) 2018-04-27 12:37 am (UTC)(link)
Okay, I honestly have to ask. What is gross about two adult men who have never previously met having sex? Even if they are cousins, what does that effectively mean? They have no prior familial relationship. The blood thing doesn't matter as they aren't having kids. Considering the fact that their dads are both dead, it's not like they would even have an awkward family reunion.

While there are plenty of reasons to be against incest, what actually applies in this scenario?

The reason the relationship in this case is wrong is because one guy is a sociopathic asshole. They share a bit of DNA, oh well?

(Anonymous) 2018-04-27 02:32 am (UTC)(link)
You could say the same about two people of the opposite sex who are related and having sex, but using protection. Some things are still icky to people on a genetic incest level, even if it's only the potential.

YOU don't have to find it icky. But trying to argue other people out of finding incest icky is a losing battle that I'm honestly not even sure why you're invested in winning.

(Anonymous) 2018-04-26 11:54 pm (UTC)(link)
I'd be completely willing to call a relationship with an adopted sibling incest, and that sounds 1000x more disgusting than cousins who never knew each other or grew up together.

(Anonymous) 2018-04-27 12:31 am (UTC)(link)
Actually, incest is defined as sexual relationships between immediate family members, with additional social taboos against relations between immediate step family or adopted family members. First cousins, not being immediate family, would fall into the second category if you grew up with them. Otherwise, since a first cousin is not an immediate family member, having sex with a first cousin isn't incest, it's just kind of icky by modern standards. Additionally, from a biological standpoint, heterosexual cousin sex doesn't create offspring with a significant risk of unwanted genetic defects unless the family makes a habit of inbreeding or lives in an isolated community where everyone's a little related already.

So maybe just filter out fic with relationships you're not interested in instead of demanding that people redefine concepts to better accommodate your squicks.

Not incest in many parts of the world. (*flashes back to Harry Potter fandom and the Black family tree*)

Uh, nope. Genetic incest is just as much real incest as incest where you grow up together. I actually don't care about first cousin incest. Ship one ship that are cousins, in fact. But it is incest, and it should be tagged.
