They're first cousins who grew up not knowing each other at all. That is extremely borderline as to whether or not it "counts" as incest.

Sorry if it squicks you, but I don't think this is a case where there's a right and wrong answer.

(Anonymous) 2018-04-26 11:25 pm (UTC)(link)
Yeah, cousins who grow up together hook up. Marrying your cousin is legal in many places.

Whether they grew up not knowing of each other or not does not make blood relation irrelevant or lesser. They are not less first cousins for that.

Uh, incest isn't about sexual relationships between people who grew up together, it's about people who are biologically related. It doesn't matter if two cousins grew up on different planets. They're still cousins.

Uh, nope. Genetic incest is just as much real incest as incest where you grow up together. I actually don't care about first cousin incest. Ship one ship that are cousins, in fact. But it is incest, and it should be tagged.

(Anonymous) 2018-04-26 11:22 pm (UTC)(link)
Thorki's heyday must have sucked for you.

(Anonymous) 2018-04-26 11:52 pm (UTC)(link)
OP- Yes indeed, and that's why I have it blacklisted on tumblr and AO3. Now I just have to wait for the people who ship this to settle on one consistent name and I can block that, too.

(Anonymous) 2018-04-27 01:42 am (UTC)(link)
But Thor and Loki weren't biologically related? Yes, they did grow up together but Thorki is not technically incest.
Also it is legal where I am for cousins to marry. I understand it is a squick for you (and I'm not a fan of cousins being together), but cousins marrying is not really seen as 'incest' nowadays.

Yes, in the US at least. :( I mean, look at this from the perspective of the grandparents... Imagine if you had a son and daughter (or whatever other gender combo) and then down the line you find out that your daughter's baby is having sex with your son's baby??

It might not be illegal or genetically unhealthy, but... eeeuurggh??

(Anonymous) 2018-04-27 12:01 am (UTC)(link)
I'm not a part of this particular fandom, but I've been in fandoms with big incest ships and I haven't seen many (if any) people wishing they weren't unrelated, so I doubt that's the reason they don't tag.

I'm a fan of tagging everything always, so I support you, OP.

It's almost like "grew up together as siblings" and "biologically related" are BOTH incestuous sorts of relationships and it's not shocking to consider them both worth tagging.

Are they tagging it with a relationship tag and the characters names? Cause... if you know they're related and the fic has relationship tags, is an incest tag necessary?

i'm guessing there's no name-smush or ship name for them on tumblr and it's popping up in the individual character tags?

because i can see how that would be really annoying actually and almost impossible to avoid. i personally don't bother with main tags unless i'm looking for gifsets or fanart to reblog of something i don't follow a blog for, but i can understand that you wouldn't want to feel like that's your only option to avoid it.

i can suggest to try blacklisting erik x t'challa? it might not get it all but hopefully it'll get some? otherwise i don't have many idea for you i'm afraid.

i hope you figure out something OP.

[and btw as someone who does ship incest i respect your right to want to avoid it, i don't know why people are getting snippy at you wanting to be able to do that, the whole 'you do you' thing goes both ways]

As a hard-core Wincest shipper, this really isn't 'incest' (and legally isn't, either). You know they're related, so - easy to avoid those fics, just filter out the name/name tags.

I mean, sure, fine, you find it 'icky', but it's not like it's an insurmountable obstacle.

So, this got me curious as to what Wakandan attitudes to relationships between cousins would be. Americans have a very strong taboo against sexual relationships between first cousins, but that's not shared by much of the world.

And, doing some quick checking, most of Africa doesn't seem to frown on it; indeed, marriages between cousins are encouraged in some cultures, such as the Hausa people in Nigeria.

However, there is one strong exception! Ethiopia, historical, has had incredibly strong taboos against relationships between cousins, going so far as to consider third cousins the equivalent of brother and sister, and at least theoretically prohibiting marriages between even sixth cousins.

And Wakanda is at least partially inspired by Ethiopia; in the MCU, it borders it, they're both African nations that successfully resisted colonization, with ancient monarchies and a history of isolationism.

So congrats, OP! You can make a case that Wakandan culture would be just as disgusted by cousin incest as you are!

Dude, they're cousins who didn't even grow up together. It's not that big a deal, there's worse incest out there. Funny you take issue with the one incest ship falling under these weak parameters and also doesn't involve two white boys.

I don't really see the point, as long as the pairing itself is tagged. It's a self-demonstrating trope.

Also chiming in with the chorus of "Hahaha, cousins? Puh-lease" because I have so many of those ships they don't even ping as incest anymore.

(Anonymous) 2018-04-27 12:16 pm (UTC)(link)
Chiming into agree with the people who have pointed out that taboos and practices regarding relationships between first cousins vary widely across cultures and time, with some even preferring or requiring marriage between them. While it squicks me out because of my own cultural background, we can't assume that all people everywhere will hold the same views.

That said, I do think that authors posting fic to major archives should indeed tag it out of courtesy. Allow people to filter out the pairing as they would any other.

The problem here is that you're forcing your cultural preferences onto others and then complain about them being impolite. Get off your high horse and learn to backbutton instead of acting as tag police. You're exactly as charming as a grammar nazi.

(I bet you're one of the "NEED to tag for bottom/top!" crazies also; never mind who's topping or bottoming might never have crossed the author's mind, or, shockingly, they switch!)
