Chiming into agree with the people who have pointed out that taboos and practices regarding relationships between first cousins vary widely across cultures and time, with some even preferring or requiring marriage between them. While it squicks me out because of my own cultural background, we can't assume that all people everywhere will hold the same views.

That said, I do think that authors posting fic to major archives should indeed tag it out of courtesy. Allow people to filter out the pairing as they would any other.

Filtering out individual pairings is more reliable as it doesn't involve just hoping that people will tag the way you want them to tag.

Sure. And you're allowed to tag fics with multiple tags, so why not just do both out of courtesy?

The problem is that this requires people to tag things as "incest" that they themselves not only don't consider incest, but might not even realize that someone else might consider incest.

OK, sure, I guess, it's possible. But then, once they're made aware of it by a request from a reader to tag it as such, they should be sure to do so moving forward out of basic courtesy. There ARE certain rules and procedures that have been well-established in fandom; ignorance is only an excuse until the first time you've received a complaint or request. I've tagged plenty of fic with various warnings that I don't think need them because I recognize that by posting fic to the internet, I am engaging with a community that has particular norms. As a long-term writer, I've never bought into the "all fans are entitled and ungrateful for asking for simple requests, while all writers are free to do whatever they want" mentality.

This. I refuse to tag as incest and prefer to tag as 'cousin relationship'. I mean it's legal in many places and canonical in a ton of fandoms including things like "Victoria".
