I've been writing fanfic for a little over 10 years now, and I'm currently writing something I never thought I'd write: self-insert fic. I'm well aware that that's a fandom "shall not," but it's honestly one of the most cathartic experiences I've ever had writing a fic. I don't think I'll ever publish it, but it feels so right writing it. I was confronting my emotions on some heavy personal topics with the help of my favorite character. I almost wish I had done this sooner, but I know my embarrassment during my younger years would've prevented me. I'm just glad I have this thing just for me now rather than never!

I've written self-inserty (but not Mary Sue!) stuff anyway. :P

I don't think self insert fic or self insert fantasy in itself is regarded as such an awful or embarrassing thing in fandom. I would assume most everyone has some kind of self insert fantasy. It's like kinks. Most everyone has them. But having them and letting them all hang out in public without warning is different.

Now, writing and posting said fic under an OC tag, or even worse, under a regular fandom tag, when it's painfully obvious this is the authors uncomfortably personal Mary Sue self insert idfic fantasy masquerading as a story for other people, is a different ball game. Thats usually what people mean when they refer to other people's self insert fic

I wouldn't worry about the fic you're talking about. Nobody can complain about self insert fic that's never posted, because how would they even read it?

Glad it's helped you.

Good for you, OP!

I have several self-insert plots in each of my fandoms, although I'll never write them down because I enjoy altering them every time I daydream about them.

Hey if you're having fun go for it.

I'd argue all fiction is self indulgent on some level.

Helping to exorcise your demons is one of the best uses of drawerfic, OP. It's good that it helped you.

As a self insert writer myself, I'm glad it's helping You! It's a lot of fun and sometimes, as it is for you, it's a cathartic experience!

good for you! I think a lot of us do this, it's just not something we talk about like which brand of toilet paper you prefer.

Well, it seems like this has been the thing in fandom lately. I still think it’s kind of cringy though.

Good for you, OP! My dream is to someday be able to do that without being super self-conscious about it. Right now I have to stick to daydreaming I guess lol

Publish it, by all means! Fic should exist in all forms for all fandoms, in an ideal world. You're making someone happy, and with a single tag you'll make it easy to avoid for people like me. Live and let live.

I assume that nearly every write has written such a story at one point. There are some nicely written self-insert stories outthere which are not creepy at all. But these are the are the rare gems you have to find.

I can relate to this secret because at one point in my life they only way I could deal with the emotional rollercoaster I was going through was to write it down in the form of letters I was writting to a long dead historical person, who I wish I could talk to and get help from.

There had been times when I thought that this had been silly but in the end it had helped me. But that is one of the things I am not going to tell because it is personal and because I choose a really problematic person to talk to.

Tag that shit and post it if you want man. :) As long as you indicate that it's a self insert fic nobody can complain about it (at least with any legitimacy) - and some of the top fics I've read have been self inserts. Other people like that kind of stuff too.

I've never written it, but boy howdy do I love reading self-insert fic. I even love me a good self-insert Mary Sue, if it's well written. Don't feel too self-conscious, some of us readers do love them, and I always hit the Kudos button extra hard for self-insert fic.
