After years of only watching anime I've got into a live action series, but I'm feeling too - scared? possessive? embarrassed? - to check if there is a fandom.

I've been writing fanfic for a little over 10 years now, and I'm currently writing something I never thought I'd write: self-insert fic. I'm well aware that that's a fandom "shall not," but it's honestly one of the most cathartic experiences I've ever had writing a fic. I don't think I'll ever publish it, but it feels so right writing it. I was confronting my emotions on some heavy personal topics with the help of my favorite character. I almost wish I had done this sooner, but I know my embarrassment during my younger years would've prevented me. I'm just glad I have this thing just for me now rather than never!

There's a line in this series that kind of changed my life. The main character had a hard childhood and became a very good thief. A teenage boy he talks to says to him, "That's so cool. I wish I grew up like that and had your skills. I'd be strong." And the main character replies, "Growing up like that doesn't make you strong. It just makes you sad." It really struck me. And I resolved to be grateful for my relatively normal childhood, and I have, ever since. S!B: Yes, a crappy SciFi Channel show had a major effect on my life.

P.S. I totally had a crush on the main character (Cade).
