I always thought people got judgy about authors replying to comments because it boosts the comment count and makes the story look more popular than it is.

I don't use comment counts to choose what to read, though, and I don't write fic so I'm not competing with anyone for comments, therefore I don't care how many of the comments on a story are actually just the author replying to people.

That's not a thing. And I donm't understand why so many people think it is. I mean, comment count is NOT going to increase your story's visibility unfairly unless you're already getting a truly staggering number of comments and then you replied to every single one.

Most people aren't getting enough comments that replying to them would lead to "cheating" your story's ranking. They're just not.

(and most people don't, I think, search by comment count anyway). Why worry about cheating when there's no prize to win anyway?

Gee, I dunno. Maybe because it IS a thing! Imagine that.

You must be new here.

It's absolutely a thing that people get judgemental about it. It's not a thing that having more comments benefits the author outside of bragging rights.

I always divide the number of comments by two. I just assume that people are polite enough to talk to each other.
