[Fleur Delacour from Harry Potter]

I agree, but it's going to be a problem for any character described to be ridiculously beautiful, from Helen of Troy to Tolkien's elves and whoever else. People can agree on some general hallmarks of beauty, but overall it's subjective.

I think she's gorgeous. The hair, makeup, and costuming in GoF was all-around atrocious, though. No one looked as good as they should have.

Trying to cast someone who is supernaturally beautiful is difficult, since beauty can be so subjective, but I do agree that they should have done more with her.

(Anonymous) 2018-04-30 11:48 pm (UTC)(link)
Yeah, they could probably have given her makeup or maybe contacts or something. So even if an audience doesn't think she's super pretty, they can tell there's something supernatural about her.

I'm still mostly confused about why the books made Beauxbatons an all-girls school for no reason.

"I'm still mostly confused about why the books made Beauxbatons an all-girls school for no reason."

Same. It's bugged me since the movie came out.

I haven't read the books in a loooooonnnnng time, but I don't think Beauxbatons was an all girls school in the books. Neither was Durmstrang an all guys school.

(Anonymous) 2018-05-01 01:24 am (UTC)(link)
It wasn't. Parvati Patil danced with a Beauxbatons guy at the ball, and they mention a Durmstrang girl. It makes no sense they'd change it.

No boy wizards in France.

*movies

I meant movies, not books. Oops!

Yeah, they pretty much didn't...have Veela in the movies and instead reduced the foreign schools to Pretty French Girls and Manly Scandinavians with no details to explain that there was anything special about her. If they wanted her to seem unnaturally beautiful they would have had to go farther than casting, and I don't know how that would have worked unless the point was to laugh at the guys going stupid in their presence (which it sometimes was).

(Anonymous) 2018-05-01 12:33 am (UTC)(link)
I thought the Durmstrang guys were supposed to be slavic

(Anonymous) 2018-05-01 08:19 am (UTC)(link)
They were! Manly, hairy Slavs.

(Anonymous) 2018-05-01 12:24 am (UTC)(link)
That’s an industry problem. If they cast normal-looking people for normal-looking characters, it would be easier to show an unusually beautiful character.

Good point!

+1

IDK, she's plenty hot enough I think.

(Anonymous) 2018-05-01 01:57 am (UTC)(link)
It seemed like being only part-veela, she's only supernaturally beautiful to people that are attracted to her? Harry and Hermione seemed to think she didn't look particularly special. They could have given her some special effects, but that would be one more thing to explain to the movie-only crowd so I can understand why they didn't.

I thought that's what the butterflies and slo-mo were all about.

(Anonymous) 2018-05-01 02:07 am (UTC)(link)
And, well, the boys behaving the way they did.

Re: I thought that's what the butterflies and slo-mo were all about.

(Anonymous) 2018-05-01 02:11 am (UTC)(link)
That might work, but they gave butterflies and slo-mo to all the girls when they came into the Great Hall. Unless Beauxbatons is full of veela now?
