Dakota Fanning in War of the Worlds. Yeah, she was screaming. That is what a normal child does when their world ends.

The problem for me wasn't that her reaction was unrealistic, it's that her reaction was in the exact register and volume to make it mildly physically painful. Which doesn't make the character endearing, or the experience enjoyable.

I hear my neighobrs' kids scream every day. They're doing it right now. I don't spend money to go to the movies to hear that.

It's also realistic for characters to have to defecate regularly but with few exceptions we tend not to show our heroes zipping off to the bathroom to take a shit. Because it'd be gross and annoying and would bring the plot to a screeching halt.
