109, 151, 166

109. I loved Claymore and have tried to get many of my friends into it. Badass women with swords ftw.

151. I went to one of his panels at Animazement this year although it was a combo panel with Kyle Hebert and I was really there for him and the amount of times Vic talked about god repulsed me. Sure, I have beliefs but I don't shove them in everyone's face and religion is a touchy, red-flag subject to begin with. When he said that god has given him everything good in his life, I turned to one of my friends and asked "Which god?" and about 5 people behind me gave me a look of horror. I guess I forgot to bring a bible to bang on.

166. Oh shit, I guess I'm not balanced then. I've been gothic for almost 20 years and my hair has been bright blue since the early 90s. It's amusing that people are still that close-minded about appearance. You probably look better and are more confident than those that try to demean you.

YES. Also what people don't get is also that by implication there must be something wrong with you if god hasn't given you all these wonderful things in your life. If you have had a shit life full of abuse then yes it does get sickening to hear religious nuts go on and on about how god has given them so many good things.

Re: 151

[identity profile] blueutopiah.livejournal.com 2008-07-25 10:19 pm (UTC)(link)
I'm sorry but I worked too hard for the good things in my life to claim that any god had a hand in them. Conversely, I take responsibility and/or action for the bad things that happen as well; I solve the problem or I learn to deal and move on as hard as it may be. It angers me when people claim that god is punishing someone because bad things happen to them. Shouldn't it be that if they praise god for the good things, they should blame god for the bad things?

Re: 151

[identity profile] cdaae.livejournal.com 2008-07-25 10:28 pm (UTC)(link)
I have a friend who's mother gets an annual Christmas card with one of those photocopied letters sent to all relatives, from some distant cousin. My friend's brother killed himself. In that year, this cousin's letter contained a list of all the things God had blessed them with that year, such as a new condo and car and their daughter getting a wonderful highly paid new job.

I really thought she should have written back saying "This year, God increased my chronic health problems to such a degree that I barely left the house, then made my son jump off a bridge".

Because yes, sometimes religious people should know when to STFU about God.

Re: 151

[identity profile] scientivity.livejournal.com 2008-07-25 10:48 pm (UTC)(link)
God didn't give me any of the good things I have in my life - he gave me the abilities I needed to get those things for myself. Whether or not I actually did get them was up to me.

Conversely, God isn't punishing me with any of the hardship in my life. Hardship is hardship; my faith gives me the strength to overcome it and grow intellectually and emotionally from it.

It's just as disgusting to me when someone praises God for "giving" them good fortune or material things as when someone condemns him for "punishing" them with grief and hardship.

In other words, I'm pretty sure I'm mostly agreeing with this comment. Just my take on the whole thing.

Re: 151

[identity profile] xanykaos.livejournal.com 2008-07-25 11:06 pm (UTC)(link)
Actually, I think the concept is more that when you talk about what God has blessed you with--opportunities, talent, chances, luck (and honestly, in any arts career, working hard isn't enough--you are going to need loads of luck), and the strength to endure through the bad times--you're focusing on the good things in your life. He's talking about the good things, but that doesn't mean that he doesn't have his share of suckitude as well. Like every human person, he probably has horrible things he's had to go through. He's just looking at his life with an (please forgive the rhyme, it's unintentional) attitude of gratitude. If that's annoying, then it really seems...well, it seems more your problem than his.

So someone is grateful because his life is going well. Who is his grateful to is not the issue, just that he's grateful. This annoys you.

That just seems sad.

No, there actually is a strain of fundamentalist Xian philosophy that does believe material blessings are gifts from G-d and that the less fortunate...

I know. It's not got anything to do with any Xian theology I recognise either, but here, check out [livejournal.com profile] dark_christian.

Re: 151

[identity profile] omorka.livejournal.com 2008-07-26 02:42 am (UTC)(link)
Wow, never thought I'd see that community plugged on this one! But yes, "Name It And Claim It" so-called theology is astonishingly widespread these days.

Re: 109, 151, 166

[identity profile] paperclipchains.livejournal.com 2008-07-26 12:59 am (UTC)(link)
... So you're repulsed because he thanked God.

I think you have to have a wicked entitlement complex to believe that no one should ever thank God in your presence because you don't feel that way personally. It's not like it's a fucking preacher in your school or something like that, and it's not like they're telling you that YOU need to be thankful too.

Re: 109, 151, 166

[identity profile] blueutopiah.livejournal.com 2008-07-26 01:36 am (UTC)(link)
Oh, I have no problem with someone mentioning god in my prescence, but someone who mentions god 10 times in a 40 minute anime panel has an issue with time and place. As I've said before, religion is a hot-button issue and I was replused by how inappropriate his continuous acknowledgement was.

You can calm down now...rub on your bible or something. And yes, I do have a wicked entitlement complex, but it doesn't extend into flawed religions. :D

Re: 109, 151, 166

[identity profile] paperclipchains.livejournal.com 2008-07-26 02:32 am (UTC)(link)
I'm an athiest. I'm not concerned because you're insulting my religion. You're just making the rest of us look bad.

Get over yourself. Jesus.

Re: 109, 151, 166

[identity profile] blueutopiah.livejournal.com 2008-07-26 02:41 am (UTC)(link)
I couldn't possibly make you look any worse, you're doing fine on your own. And please don't associate me with athieism, I don't cop out like that.

Re: 109, 151, 166

(Anonymous) 2008-07-26 02:49 am (UTC)(link)
I believe you missed the point. The commenter was repulsed because of the amount of times Vic mentioned God, not because he mentioned God. The level of offense you've taken is a little over-the-top.

Re: 109, 151, 166

[identity profile] paperclipchains.livejournal.com 2008-07-26 03:13 am (UTC)(link)
I'm not offended; I'm always this hateful. I just think it's ridiculous to hate on someone for thanking God publicly.
