My husband is in town this weekend so we went to brunch and then he went to Costco for me, brought me some Starbucks, and now we're watching the Kentucky Derby pregame show. Probably gonna get Italian for dinner, then I'mma get some good D and then some good shut-eye.

Being sick. I need to clean house because I’m a slob and my uncle and his husband are coming to visit this week, but everything hurts and I’m exhausted and nauseated and feverish and fountaining mucus everywhere. I think I’m gonna take tomorrow off work.

Movie Club Discussion!

Today we are discussing Zodiac!

Here are some questions to start us off.

1. What was your initial reaction when the movie started? How did that change by the end of the movie?

2. Who was your favorite character in the movie? Your least favorite character? Why?

3. What was your favorite scenes? Your least favorite? Why?

4. What did you think of the soundtrack and/or score?

5. What did you think of the production (cinematography, editing, costuming, etc.)?

1. Well, this is like my fifth time watching the movie so I have the same sense of awe every time. This movie is such a phenomenal thriller.

2. My favorite character was probably RDJ's Paul Avery. He was the one sense of humor in an otherwise depressing film. Plus his fashion sense was amazing. I don't really have a least favorite? I guess I could say the Zodiac but he is more of a plot device than character.

3. I had SO many favorite scenes. The stabbing by the lake scene is so viscerally aggressive. My second favorite scene is when he picks up the woman and her baby. That has got to be one of the most tension filled moments I have ever felt in my life. My third favorite is Grayson possibly confronting the Zodiac Killer in the store. Again, THE TENSION! I don't really have a least favorite. Some of the cop scenes were a bit tedious.

4.The score is pretty good, not spectacular though. However, the OST is great. So many classics.

5. This movie is so damn precise every moment felt intentional. I also LOVE how all the different Zodiac Killer scenes were played by different actors. The sound design was great, especially the one stabbing scene. It sounded so realistic.

It's a phenomenal movie, first of all. The direction is so stylish, the acting is so good, just a great movie from top to bottom. It tells its story really effectively, which is a hard thing to do with a story like this one. I've seen it before so I don't remember what my reaction was when I first watched it but it's really good.

Thematically, what I like about it is like... it's so good at portraying the Zodiac story as a mystery - as something that's incredibly complex, and incredibly mysterious, but also ultimately unknowable. And that's something that's really interesting to me, and watching the way that different people reacted to it, especially Graysmith getting totally obsessed with it, was really well done. The idea of someone being completely devoted to pursuing a truth that fundamentally cannot be reached. Those are the parts that are most interesting to me - the investigation, the questions, all of that stuff.

Off-topic, in a way. I've foolishly volunteered to run a Jane Austen course at a local seniors' institution. Your questions seem to me to be just the sort of thing to get the discussion going after watching the films. Would it be OK if I used them? 'Cos I don't really know what I'm doing with film studies!

Just some in general thoughts: I don't like scary movies, but I really wanted to see this one, so I had my sister tell me when to cover my eyes and when it was safe to watch again. It was thrilling and creepy, but utterly fascinating.
