Add to the fact that the current generation driving a lot of fic is in college/just out of college facing a job market that's completely tanked and already carrying more debt than they feel they'll ever get out from under without the dream job ahead they were told was possible as a kid and no chance to ever live up to the financial standards their parents had and the fantasy of having someone sweep in take that all away and cater to them for being just themselves motivates the strong fandom wave currently going on.
