Not quite related, but can someone explain the popularity of this sugar baby thing for me? Not just as a fandom thing, but seemingly people's very real interest in becoming one? The very idea is repulsive to me, it's just all of the no's.

Money.

But then why is the fantasy not "I have money" instead of "A person who is sexually interested in me has money and can take it away the moment interest fades"?

Obviously, it’s a fantasy. So you’re too sexy and fascinating for interest to ever fade. So sexy and fascinating, in fact, that hot, rich silver foxes are tripping over themselves to provide you with everything you could ever want.

'I'm so attractive and vivacious that someone is going to spoil me rich just for existing. I'll never have to work a day in my life and I'll live like royalty just because I am and all I have to do is give them occasional sex and attention and otherwise get to do my own thing'. Oftentimes with a mix of 'oh its so dirty and shameful' kink. Power imbalance kink is sometimes a thing too as well as manipulation on one or both sides. Lots of people dig being SO desirable that just them existing is enough to justify being smothered in privilege (lots of princess scenarios fulfill this too). Add to the fact that the current generation driving a lot of fic is in college/just out of college facing a job market that's completely tanked and already carrying more debt than they feel they'll ever get out from under without the dream job ahead they were told was possible as a kid and no chance to ever live up to the financial standards their parents had and the fantasy of having someone sweep in take that all away and cater to them for being just themselves motivates the strong fandom wave currently going on.

*know your audience and you can write drek and still make it a best seller

The above comments included, but also having the opportunity to have someone who will be a mentor (among) other things. Feeling wanted by someone who for all intents and purposes has it together & is successful. Paying for [grad] school. Desiring to travel. Boredom. There are probably a lot of reasons.

So, on one level, it's a powerful fantasy about money and luxury and possession, and then sexually, there's all kinds of stuff with power and domination and surrender and desire, and themes like that, which is just something that a lot of people are fundamentally interested in.

On another level, I think the underlying dynamic is interesting because it's complex and ambiguous. It's on the face of it a purely sexual, well-defined, simple arrangement - but then you have an enormous amount of room to complicate the relationship with either sexual or romantic feelings getting involved. And I think that's a powerful fantasy for people - starting off at one level, and then having feelings that are so strong that you can't avoid making the relationship something real. Obviously, this is more the case with romantic stories than with actual RL interest in being a sugar baby, but nevertheless, it's a powerful narrative.

For me personally, I think I come at it from a slightly different angle b/c I fantasize about it more from the other side - from the role of the provider. So from that point of view, it's partly a power fantasy. It's partly a fantasy about being able to provide for and satisfy someone in a really complete and total way. And, obviously, it's partly a fantasy about that particular sort of romantic / sexual dynamic I mentioned above.

It's an interesting question, though - I really find these conversations interesting.
