So, on one level, it's a powerful fantasy about money and luxury and possession, and then sexually, there's all kinds of stuff with power and domination and surrender and desire, and themes like that, which is just something that a lot of people are fundamentally interested in.

On another level, I think the underlying dynamic is interesting because it's complex and ambiguous. It's on the face of it a purely sexual, well-defined, simple arrangement - but then you have an enormous amount of room to complicate the relationship with either sexual or romantic feelings getting involved. And I think that's a powerful fantasy for people - starting off at one level, and then having feelings that are so strong that you can't avoid making the relationship something real. Obviously, this is more the case with romantic stories than with actual RL interest in being a sugar baby, but nevertheless, it's a powerful narrative.

For me personally, I think I come at it from a slightly different angle b/c I fantasize about it more from the other side - from the role of the provider. So from that point of view, it's partly a power fantasy. It's partly a fantasy about being able to provide for and satisfy someone in a really complete and total way. And, obviously, it's partly a fantasy about that particular sort of romantic / sexual dynamic I mentioned above.

It's an interesting question, though - I really find these conversations interesting.
