Please *do not* link to things in your fic. For instance 'they went into a church' with the word 'church' linked to some picture you picked out on Google. If you can't sketch me out that church in a few words or a sentence or two, then don't bother. The link is really, really, really annoying. *seethes*

Oh gods, that's a thing? I once came across a fic that embedded pictures of the (ugly) clothes the main character was wearing, and backbuttoned right the fuck out of there.

It's a thing for at least some! Arrgh, it's so distracting.

I have linked things at the *end* of a fic, in notes, when it's something people are not universally familiar with, but of a hotel? Or a food? Just no.

I've seen stories embed links to music - I mean like, they'll have the title in the text of the story, and the title will be a link to the piece on youtube. I don't mind that so much, I guess? Mostly because it's not like, "And then we started dancing to Cotton Eye Joe by the Rednex (1995).", it's more like, "He'll be skating to Eric Satie's Gymnopédie no. 1", and then goes on to describe the performance while, theoretically, the music is playing.
I still don't follow the links because I'd find the music distracting, but I can sort of understand where the writer is coming from there.

The fic i'm reading is literally 'he went to a 'diner' and ordered the 'special' - i mean, no effort to describe anything at all, just linking to something they think embodies the thing they mean.

So incredibly distracting, and makes for a really bland and boring fic.

I don't mind if they add links in the notes or make a header/art for the fic with aesthetic photos.
I've never seen someone link in the middle of fic though. :/

I would feel like I was reading a picture book for little kids.

I kind of feel like it should be optional to click, not essential just to understand what they're talking about.

Well, it *is* an option, but when you use it instead of your actual *words* - it sure makes for a fucking boring fic.

I link to songs, I hope there isn't a problem with that. My fics often have musical references.

A song link is different, since you can either a)imagine the song in your head if you know it or b) click the link and have the song playing if you don't. But generally it's not just there so the author could skip over any description of any kind.

I don't ever click song links, but that's just me - i mostly don't like any kind of music playing while i read, since i either don't hear that music at all (to involved in the words), or have to totally stop reading to hear the music. So i mostly ignore.

Ahaha, I was just thinking the other day about how people used to put links in the author notes on FanFiction.net. "This URL is the dress Alice is wearing at prom near the end, with this URL for the necklace." At least you can ignore it if it's in the notes.

OH, yeah. I do links in the notes sometimes, if i think people will have no clue about something or if i referenced a really neat real thing. That's not a problem. Just - not in the middle of the text, please.

Years ago I was briefly part of a forum where there was a script that would detect certain key words in people's posts and turn them into links to ads about that subject. Nowadays whenever I see a fic with links in the middle of the text rather than the author's notes, my first instinct is to avoid them because I assume they're going to be stupid ads.

Omg, that sucks! What kind of craziness was that?

IDEK. The admins of the forum were kinda awful money-grubbing dictators who liked to rub in our faces the power they had over us lowly users. The whole thing pretty much imploded within a couple of months of me joining and then they went on a "delete everything and salt the earth" rampage so there's no proof about any of it.

Wild times.
