I haven't watched The Shape of Water, but I've seen lots of pictures, and I'm not super into the fishman. I can't criticise anyone who is, though, because when I was younger I was really into Ed'Rashekaresket in Deep Wizardry. Who was, y'know, an actual shark. Not even a little bit human-shaped.

Also, even though I’m into teratophilia, the fish guy from Shape of Water doesn’t do anything for me in the attraction department. Partially because I’m more into lizard types than fish or amphibians, but also because, although he’s clearly sapient and intelligent, he’s not very articulate in sign language (although humans can’t learn language for the first time as adults—languages, yes, but language, not so much, so he’s got us beat.)

People thirsting for the river god crack me up. I respect the artistry and effort that went into his design but like, he wasn’t even the prettiest magical fish man Doug Jones has ever played. XD

I wish people in my fandom didn't make me feel like such a stick-in-the-mud dinosaur for having a true OTP. I have a lot of other ships, just not really any others that involve A/B... but you'd think I had a second head because I don't also ship A/C or B/D or A/B/C/D. I just... don't. I'm not trying to shit on anyone's good time, and I'm not even that asshole that tells people not to talk about it around me, I just don't ship A/B with anyone else but each other. :(

That sucks. I'm a total multishipper, but if you really only like one pairing, why the hell should anyone give you any grief about it? It's not like that's going to make you like other pairings more, now is it?

I'm pretty much the same tbh. I do multi-ship a little sometimes but most of the time I'm all about A/B and nothing else.

Don't care if other people ship A/B apart, do what you want, but I'm not about that life. But I've never been in a fandom that's made me feel bad about that, it seems like such an odd thing to do. It's not like you'll suddenly start multi-shipping A/B if they get funny at you, if anything it's more likely to make you not want to.

There's nothing wrong with being a strictly OTP'er. For me, it depends on the pairing. Sometimes I like seeing a certain pairing in other pairs, other times it makes me sad to see them with other characters other than each other.

Same. It doesn't make sense that people talk about 12 OTPs in a fandom with 5 characters.

I realize that by OTP they simply mean "a couple that they like" or think is plausible, but that's not how I define OTP.

It just occurred to me that a suggestion on FS to try Meetup.com changed my life. I had no friends in my area. None. Now I have several, just because on a similar thread one day I said I wished there was a friendship version of Match.com.

Please *do not* link to things in your fic. For instance 'they went into a church' with the word 'church' linked to some picture you picked out on Google. If you can't sketch me out that church in a few words or a sentence or two, then don't bother. The link is really, really, really annoying. *seethes*

Occasionally, when I see people liking some of the art I post I check out their blogs. And if they have several of those "omg don't be a terrible person who just likes art, you have to REBLOG IT" posts on their blog I tend to feel more than a bit bitter because I get an average of 1 reblog opposed to many more likes.

I miss the friendships I had in my old fandoms. As in my relationships with the people. We're still in touch, but it's like once fandom went away, we had nothing.

I know that's normal, and I've made peace with it, but sometimes I wish we were still all close, instead of distant friends who even barely interact on Facebook/twitter/LJ/DW.

Star Wars fandom, fuck you. I love Star Wars so much, but you ruin my enjoyment. I want to fandom. I want to read fics. I want to enjoy my love. But I can't. Because every time I step near the fandom, all I see is hate. And I never know when I click on a fic if there will be bashing of something in it because random bashing is showing up in so many fics.

You are ruining Star Wars for everyone. Stop being assholes. Stop assuming everyone hates what you hate. Allow people to enjoy the things that they enjoy, even if you don't. For fuck's sake, no one owes you anything. The writers/creators did not owe you the movie you wanted. They are allowed to make something you don't like.

I'm taking a completely spiteful and unreasonable pleasure in the meltdown of the leftwing Kanye fandom, after all this shit with Trump. I always took TSwift's side in their feuding (even if I otherwise don't care much about her one way or the other), and was leery of all the woker-than-thou types seemingly supporting Kanye solely for his race, and now check this shit.

I was talking to a friend about how much some of the reviews I've seen which described Thanos as being 'sympathetic' and going on about him being humanised, tragic backstory, blah blah blah, have pissed me off; and how if a real life man tortured one daughter and killed another, most people would not talk about how sad they were for him (not gonna say no-one, because there's always some dick). Then I was reminded of something that actually happened where we live, and I started talking about a fountain at my old school, with a sculpture in the middle -
and my friend chuckles.
I stop talking, and give her a Look.
She, apparently not noticing the Look, tells me that the mere mention of a fountain with a sculpture in the middle reminded her of the fountain/sculpture in the Ministry of Magic in Harry Potter, and how silly and pompous it was-
At about which point I interjected to say, rather coldly, that the sculpture I was talking about was dedicated to the memory of some girls who were students of my old school who were murdered in their beds by their father.

My friend apologised, but jesus fucking christ! How do you not read the mood there! I was talking about child abuse and murder, and then I start talking about something that reminded me of, and you start talking about the funny statues, tee hee? Gods.

Okay so I just saw a Harry Potter 'theory' video that just.. AUGH I want to set things on fire. For several reasons but mainly because of the awfulness of what they're implying.

Okay FIRST of all, genius... the only reason he's famous is because he survived something that kills EVERYONE (including HIS PARENTS). Had they not died he wouldn't be famous.

Second. Can we talk about how horrible that is too suggest? "It's a good thing this child was neglected and abused or he might have developed some kind of EGO. and that would be HORRIBLE. So like... a child whose spirit has been near broken is better than a child who's got a little too much confidence for people's taste. Ego in childhood is something you can grow out of. But the scars that abuse, neglect and bullying cause? Are MUCH harder to fix and to some degree may be there forever.

Also the suggestion that abuse was GOOD for someone is disgusting.

Probably shouting into the void at this time, but this thread is here and I need to rant about something petty, so...

This novel I just started reading has an interesting premise, the characters intrigue me, and I really want to know where this is going.
But every time anybody says anything to someone else, they address them by name. Multiple times within a conversation. Even if no-one else is in the room.

I knew I find this mildly annoying when people do that IRL, but I didn't know just how much this could grate on my nerves.
I think I could live with it if it was a character quirk. Or a family quirk. But every single character does it. All the time. I don't think I'll be finishing this book...
