The show exaggerates exaggeration for comic effect. That's its thing.

Sure, absolutely. And sometimes, when you do that with perceived racial characteristics, you end up with offensive stereotypes. Like in this instance.

If anything Apu's the least offensive stereotype on the show. What's so offensive about him?

(Anonymous) 2018-05-09 01:58 am (UTC)(link)
Yeah, if you think about it Groundskeeper Willie lives in a shack on school property and nobody respects him and is used mostly for gags. Apu has a Phd, a living job and a family and had a positive role in some eps (except the one where he cheats, that is).

There's a lot less racism in America against Scots than against Indians

(Anonymous) 2018-05-09 02:22 am (UTC)(link)
Damn Scots, they ruined Scotland!

So it's time for the Oppression Olympics? Gotcha.

But you can't seriously sit me down and tell me "this character is offensive not because of what he does or says or what his role in the story is but because he has a funny voice".

(Anonymous) 2018-05-09 02:43 am (UTC)(link)
Why the hell not? That seems like an extremely easy thing to imagine - like, even if you don't think it's true of Apu, there's all kinds of stock racist accents. For instance its quite easy for me to imagine a racist impression of a Chinese person .
