He has a stereotypical comedic Indian accent

not an Indian accent

(Anonymous) 2018-05-08 11:57 pm (UTC)(link)
What's the difference?

(Anonymous) 2018-05-09 12:06 am (UTC)(link)
This. This is what a lot of people aren't getting.

(Anonymous) 2018-05-09 12:10 am (UTC)(link)
The show exaggerates exaggeration for comic effect. That's its thing.

(Anonymous) 2018-05-09 12:15 am (UTC)(link)
Sure, absolutely. And sometimes, when you do that with perceived racial characteristics, you end up with offensive stereotypes. Like in this instance.

(Anonymous) 2018-05-09 12:29 am (UTC)(link)
nayrt +1

If anything Apu's the least offensive stereotype on the show. What's so offensive about him?

(Anonymous) 2018-05-09 01:58 am (UTC)(link)
Yeah, if you think about it Groundskeeper Willie lives in a shack on school property and nobody respects him and is used mostly for gags. Apu has a Phd, a living job and a family and had a positive role in some eps (except the one where he cheats, that is).

There's a lot less racism in America against Scots than against Indians

(Anonymous) 2018-05-09 02:22 am (UTC)(link)
Damn Scots, they ruined Scotland!

(Anonymous) 2018-05-09 07:19 am (UTC)(link)
So it's time for the Oppression Olympics? Gotcha.

(Anonymous) 2018-05-09 02:27 am (UTC)(link)
But you can't seriously sit me down and tell me "this character is offensive not because of what he does or says or what his role in the story is but because he has a funny voice".

(Anonymous) 2018-05-09 02:43 am (UTC)(link)
Why the hell not? That seems like an extremely easy thing to imagine - like, even if you don't think it's true of Apu, there's all kinds of stock racist accents. For instance its quite easy for me to imagine a racist impression of a Chinese person .

Apu actually sounds a lot better. I've worked with a ton of Indian devs before and the ones who've only been here for a year or two are almost incomprehensible.

A lot of the problem is they stress different syllables in words. Another problem is that half of them are speaking British English rather than American English.

Meanwhile, the two Tier 3 ops guys who'd been in the US for a decade sounded like Apu and like an angry police chief with a slight accent respectively.

(Anonymous) 2018-05-09 02:38 pm (UTC)(link)
Are Americans incapable of understanding British English now?!

(Anonymous) 2018-05-09 07:13 pm (UTC)(link)
Were they ever capable?

(Anonymous) 2018-05-09 11:12 am (UTC)(link)
There's really not that much difference.

I grew up with a lot of Indian friends and while they didn't sound like that their parents or grandparents sure did.

They even called an immigrant kid "Freshie Apu" for sounding like that.

(Anonymous) 2018-05-09 01:35 pm (UTC)(link)
But Apu’s a highly respected and realistic portrayal of an Indian American businessman. How could he possibly be used to make fun of an immigrant kid?

(Anonymous) 2018-05-09 02:52 pm (UTC)(link)

Yes, good job proving that Apu isn't racist

(Anonymous) 2018-05-09 11:49 pm (UTC)(link)
Yes, Indian kids, who have immigrant parents with similar accents, having a bit of a giggle at the accent of an immigrant kid, from their parents' country, are totally being racist... to themselves? Right.

I don't think you know what racist means.

Their parents literally have the same accent as Apu. Their actual parents. Finding it funny that somebody has the SAME ACCENT as a cartoon character isn't racist, you pillock.

The simpsons often makes fun of different things and exaggerates it for comedic effect. Why is is only offensive when the people in question are brown? I remember that Big Book of British Smiles episode and all of the absolutely awful English accents used on the show. That's the same level we're talking about, here.
