I have a few fics that have a tonne of comments- but a lot of these are from the same few people! Don't get me wrong- it was amazing and we started talking back and forth. Yep, an entire conversation in a comments section. Would have looked weird for anyone reading. Then two of my commenters started commenting to each other, leading to some confusion from me.
Anyways, what I'm saying, OP, is not to get disheartened. I've noticed that fics with a stack of commenters, like mine, tend to have a small number of commenters who happen to comment a lot. People have entire conversations in comments sections, which is a load of fun when it happens.
I've also written fics in big fandoms with little to no commenters. I just take them as they come.
Commenters/kudos etc have nothing to do with talent and to do with hitting the right fandom at the right time.
